I was just about to post this parable, in relation to SoothingDave's 74.
There are two parables where Jesus directly speaks of the use of one's best in Christian worship. One is the use of expensive oils, which you posted. The other is condemnation of the wedding guest not wearing clothes appropriate for the wedding feast.
Yet Luther complained about the expense of the Basilica of St. Peter in his theses, virtually repeating Judas's line. With all his sola scriptura, the man was not very familiar with the Gospel, was he?

Jesus specifically said the display was ok because he was there with them - and that he was there for a limited time.
Comparing expense lavished on the person of Jesus to expense lavished on Basilica of St. Peter would seem to miss the point Jesus makes regarding his absence.
