Synagogue 3000 aims to increase Jewish worshippers

Evangelical Christian Rick Warren, and mega-church pastor, advized Synagogue 3000, an umbrella Jewish organization pushing for synagogue transformation

Some Jewish synagogues are taking their lead from a mover behind the Protestant phenomena of mega-churches.

According to Synagogue 3000, an umbrella organization pushing for synagogue transformation, there was “a pathbreaking meeting with Rick Warren ("The Purpose-Driven Life"), founding pastor of Saddleback Church" – an evangelical Christian church that average over 30,000 worshippers each weekend - to explore what synagogues can learn from mega-churches and small groups.

With a new model in place, Synagogue 3000 says that “thousands of Jewish worshippers around the country are being drawn to (the organization’s) new concept of lively, creative and spiritually welcoming communities.”  The organization says the success of its venture defies the notion that there is a decreased demand for synagogues, and claims that Synagogue 3000 congregations are growing, not shrinking.

Synagogue 3000 says that for years “many Jews spent the Jewish High Holidays (Yamim No'raim - days of awe) bored, counting pages and looking at the clock.” To change that habit, Synagogue 3000 says it seeks to engage worshippers “to be center stage active players instead of disengaged spectators.” According to the Judaism 101 website, Rosh Hashana occurs on the first and second days of Tishri, or the seventh month of the Jewish year, and “is commonly known as the Jewish New Year.” This year, the Jewish New Year began Monday, Oct. 3 at sundown.

Synagogue 3000 says its objective is to encourage Jews to recommit to Jewish tradition and “synagogue life by creating new 21st century spiritual arenas where relationships with God and with each other define everything the synagogue does.”

Synagogue 3000 was developed by Rabbi Lawrence Hoffman of Hebrew Union College and Dr. Ron Wolfson of University of Judaism, and includes 18 clergy and artists working in synagogues from New York to Los Angeles. A major gift from the Marcus Foundation, led by Home Depot's Bernie Marcus, Synagogue 3000 will lead a nationwide effort to bring a more dynamic and effective environment to Jewish congregational life, the organization said.

Synagogue 3000 says its congregations are changing the conversation about meaningful Jewish life in our time by using “traditional teachings along with theater, music, dance, exuberant singing, yoga, meditation, community activism and other creative methods to engage individuals in spiritual pursuits and active community life.” To prove its point, Synagogue 3000 cites a few examples of what it says illustrates an integration of “traditional beliefs with personally meaningful practices,” while increasing the number of worshippers:

-          In New York a  Jewish ritual theater that included a DJ, turntables and traditional instruments at the Actors Temple hosted by Artistic Director Amichai Lau-Lavie;

-          In Los Angeles a young female rabbi attracting crowds of “next generation hipsters to Yom Kippur yoga and disco break-fast (Ikar, Mid-Wilshire, Los Angeles);

-          Performer Craig Taubman leads a band for Rosh Ha Shanah service (Sinai Temple) and conducts innovative healing service on Yom Kippur;

-          To a Yom Kippur creative dance celebration themed after Daniel Pearl's "I am Jewish" statement and new underwear drive for the homeless at Temple Micah, in Washington DC.

The organization’s activities are also being pitched as helping to offset problems related to heightened security.

The High Holy Days bring a special dilemma to American congregations. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur attract more Jews to synagogue—and more attention to American Jews in general—than at any other time of year. The very prominence of this intensive Jewish season raises significant security concerns for clergy and lay leaders responsible for the safety of their members and guests,” said Ron Wolfson, President, and Shawn Landres, Director of Research at Synagogue 3000 in a joint statement. “But at a time when virtually all the synagogues in North America have had to install some level of security screening at their front doors, is this welcoming vision realistic, let alone responsible? We believe that the creation of a welcoming ambience is not only responsible.”

Elsewhere in their statement, Wolfson and Landres advize that “a synagogue whose members care enough to greet one another is a synagogue whose members are its first and most important line of defense against the unusual, the people or vehicles that don’t look quite right, the potential threat. Savvy synagogue leaders have turned this obstacle into an opportunity. The best congregations have trained their security personnel in the art of greeting. You don’t have to be fluent in Hebrew or even be Jewish to say, “Shanah tovah.” Others deploy volunteers to mitigate delays and other inconveniences caused by security checks.”

BTW, I was somewhat pro-Rick Warren before, but this is just too weird and I can't respect a guy who allows a picture like that to be taken.

I'm reminded of Ross on the "Friends" sitcom trying to get his kid interested in Hannukah. Hard to compete with Santa.

When it comes to evangelism, it's hard to compete with Jesus. AFter all...HE IS the Son of God.

Rick Warren believes in one thing only: Rick Warren.
What a money making phony! He uses religion to get a tax deduction for what is a capitalist enterprise...a money making CORPORATION. He says 90% of his money from his book goes to his "church".

I still haven't got an answer from anyone yet why Warren's Purpose Driven Life hasn't dealt with his Food Addiction???
After all...he IS the expert on Addictions, isn't he.

What a disgusting charlatan!

"I can't respect a guy who allows a picture like that to be taken."

Exactly my thought -- a Messiah complex -- is he walking on water?

Pride cometh before the fall and I wouldn't want to be "walking on water" when it occurs. :O)

"Do not carry the Name of thy Lord in vain."

'Careful, Rick Warren.

Is this article a joke?

If it's true, it doesn't surprise me, though.

Good to see you all here for the anti-Warren conspiracy meeting. Shall we all share the secret handshake? ;-) Seriously, if you want to know more about just how dangerous this guy is (promoting the one world globalist mentality which we all despise here and where the only real sin is being angry or upset at sin...) read James Sundquist's "Who's Driving the Purpose Driven Church" -- and also see Warren Smith's "Deceived on Purpose" and Noah Hutchings "The Dark Side of the Purpose Driven Church." Bob DeWaay has a manuscript finished but not printed yet. I'm waiting on the edge of my seat for that one. He is a breath of fresh air and all his stuff is available for download at twincityfellowship.com

You might also check out the Amazon.com reviews. I just had an email exchange with this guy and boy he doesn't like me now. Several lies and fabrications included therein,not the least of which is his claim that my hubby Cyrano questioned his salvation, or that I continued to 'harangue' him after he expressed a desire not to continue a debate that he started and never supported...all the while claiming that Sundquist is 'bearing false witness' against 'brother-in-Christ-Rick.' So I guess it's OK for him to bear false witness against me, Cyrano, and James Sundquist because he couldn't answer anything using Scripture.

Have you noticed that the only people undeserving of compassion and positive stroking nowadays are those who are upset at being vilified, marginalized and ostracized by those promoting Rick Warren's teachings?

Then again, apparently he did feel he needed to continue the debate because he went over to amazon and posted a comeback to us! d'oh!

my ISP's mail server got blacklisted now. (I only sent the guy one email after he said he didn't desire to continue the discussion, and all that said was how convenient it was to duck out of the convo now that he had an 'opponent' he approved of in style.) Coincidence? I suppose it very well could be.

BTW, I also meant to say LOL to the food addiction stuff. He must be aware of his aesthetic problem though, lest why would he dress in black from stem to stern?

All kidding aside, though, the only thing I know about this guy is that he is very popular among those I work with who think God forgives all, without even asking him to.

They think all sin is equal, and that abortion is no different than a lie. The lie is forgiven, the abortion is forgiven, and the liar and the aborter are saved without repentence and without question.

They believed this before a Purpose Driven Life came along, so I'm not blaming Mr. Warren, but his philosophy is a perfect fit for them.

Rick Warren's weirdness (I'm being kind) is absolutely breathtaking. So, rather than "Come to Jesus as your Messiah," Warren is telling Jews to develop seeker-friendly mega-synagogues? Warren's clearly more impressed with his own methods than he is the gospel.
