Strange, but true: the lack of Scripture reading in evangelical worship

As this piece points out, the churches where you are least likely to hear Scripture read during services are often those where the authority and teaching of Scripture are most emphasized, particularly evangelical churches. Strange, but true. And the writer’s experience is that even Anglican evangelical churches often read Scripture in their worship less.

My personal experience as one with a evangelical/fundamentalist background? My current REC church is the first of my church homes where Scripture is regularly read during services outside the context of the sermon.

I think this is one way is which evangelical-style worship impoverishes itself. As I’ve experienced first hand, there is a power to formally reading the raw word of God in worship. I'd much rather sit and listen to the reading of Scripture than sing one more “praise and worship” song. And Scripture reading is a prominent feature of Jewish and Christian worship through the centuries. Why cut oneself off from that?

Yes, I greatly value the role of Lector, of reading the Scripture lessons aloud during services.

We're basically the rejects from a certain Reformation ping list. If you have ever applied for inclusion on that list and have been rejected on theological or other grounds, then you are entitled, by virtue of your rejection, to automatic membership in the Fraternal Order of The Knights of the Eternal Timetable (KOETT) AKA, "The Knights who say Neener Neener Neener" (N³ for short).

As the information on Chavez comes in, I'm surprised the US Gov't has not opposed his "regime" in Venezuela up to this point....oh, wait a minute....we HAVE!

Apparently, Chavez uses his oil money to oppose and destabilize other governments in the region AND to provide support for illegal drug trafficking.

I understand he has issued statements of support for terrorists in their campaign PARTICULARLY against the US.

Now, Mugabe has been elected in Zimbabwe, and I can assure you that I think that nation would be better of with that old murderer dead. I will say the same about Saddam Hussein.

If it's true that Chavez supports the illegal drug trade, then I have no more problem assenting to his demise than to any of the Escobars going the same route.

I'm not about to defend Pat. And I'm not about to deny that I haven't had the same feelings about some other world leaders (expressing them on national TV is a different matter).

I don't doubt that he probably really meant what he said. But I'm guessing Pat just hit post before he thought about what he was really saying.

Pat Robertson is an embarassment for Christianity. I sometimes wonder if he, Falwell, and the entire TBN network are not part of some grand conspiracy to discredit Christians with their antics.

I think he might have been better to say something like, "As an American citizen, this is my opinion on Chavez...."

I think it's legitimate for pastors to separate personal political versus religious opinions.

I could agree on the assassination of Chavez on the one hand, and on the other pray for his salvation. They are not contradictory.

Due to age and infirmity, I think Pat should have his live microphone taken away. He used to be sharper, but he is clearly in his declining years. Nonetheless, I do not see Chavez as any friend of America, and "don't cry for him, Venezuela" if he gets offed. The guy is Daniel Ortega all over again.

I agree, but my point is Brother Pat ain't the authorities. Granted anyone of us can say something stupid, and he messed up just like any other sinner is capable of doing. But he should realize what he did is wrong and back down, period.
