It borrows heavily from mythology and fairy tales, just like most fantasy does. Yes, I am writing my own "evil" fantasy book. It has magic, a dragon, vampir, etc. I researched a bit on mythology. In my case it's based on another world. Actually, these threads motivate me to write more, in hopes that maybe I will someday see a similar thread about one of my stories. Especially, since, my story does have a Christian undertones.
People say Tolkein was different, but there is no deity mentioned in The Lord of the Rings. Sometimes a story really is a story. But, we will agree to disagree. Neither one of is is about to change their point of view.

Umm. Yes, there was. His name is Eru, "The One".

True, there is no organized religion in Tolkien's world. However, Tolkien himself wrote that his work was "fundamentally religious and Catholic..." in nature, in which, "...the religious element is absorbed into the story and the symbolism." --see "The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien," the letter dated 12/2/53 to Robert Murray, S.J.

Good luck to you on your book. I hope it's a good one. I find most Fantasy fiction too silly to take seriously. My love of that genre pretty much begins and ends with Tolkien. May you prove me wrong!
