If Elected, I Will Not Serve
Midwest Conservative Journal ^ | 5/5/5/ | Christopher Johnson

A candidate for ECUSA Presiding Bishop bows out:

My brothers and sisters in Christ,

In my desire to keep you fully informed, I write to let you know I received a letter in March from the Joint Nominating Committee for the Election of the 26th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, advising me of my nomination for consideration for this position. I was extremely flattered, pleased and grateful to be nominated.

I have prayerfully considered this prospect, and I thoroughly read the document sent with the letter, A Call to Discernment, which was most helpful in arriving at my final decision.

My work in the Diocese of Los Angeles is not yet completed. We have created many new projects and opportunities and are getting a grasp on where we are headed as a Diocese. I am excited about the ministries we can accomplish here in this most diverse area of the Episcopal Church.

I understand the importance of the position of Presiding Bishop, but I have declined the nomination. My recent amputation had nothing to do with my decision not to accept the nomination, and I am pleased to tell you I am out and about working in the Diocese again.

I send to you my thanks for your prayers and encouragement.

Yours in Christ,

+J. Jon Bruno

---

It's probably too early to read much into this.  But the fact that a bishop as hard-left and as polarizing as J. Jon Bruno was a serious candidate for Presiding Bishop does not bode at all well for ECUSA's remaining conservatives as well as for ECUSA's relations with the rest of the Anglican world.

It could very well be that ECUSA's liberals feel deep-down that ECUSA will soon be read out of the Anglican world anyway so they no longer need to fake moderation.  Or they have finally decided that they can no longer force themselves to share a church and a tradition with men like Bob Duncan, Peter Akinola and other Episcopal and Anglican conservatives.

How many nominees are put forward by this Nominating Committee? Who are other viable candidates?

I have to say, I don't know. I'm not at all familiar with ECUSA's customs and canons above the diocesan level.

I am willing to place a bet that the next PB will be none other than Vicki Gene.

Is there a better way to give the finger to God?

Ummm.. I tend to think it won't be so. That would be too precipitate an action. But I could be wrong; I don't sit on their councils.

The next PB will be at least Robinson-friendly, though.

" I am excited about the ministries we can accomplish here in this most diverse area of the Episcopal Church."

There's that "diversity" stuff again.

"My recent amputation had nothing to do with my decision not to accept the nomination...."

Three parishes from his diocese?

sionssar, you know, I hope you know, that I love you Episcopalians (well, I don't love that Bishop Robinson, but you knew that), but good gosh, as an Irish woman I've got to say, you all sure do love to talk.

Talky, talky, talky. Jaw-jaw. Ok, it's better than war-war, but ohmigosh, when is enough, enough?

Stop TALKING about everthing.

Sorry, but these thoughts have been in my mind a long time.

The very essence of a letter I wrote to Archbishop Akinola a few months ago...
