I've got to love it when dioceses helpfully do my work for me. Take the Diocese of Olympia for example, which has kindly prepared these two tables, one for 2003, and the other for 2004, showing their congregational giving (or congregational non-giving as the case may be). The upshot is pretty simple - in 2003, unpaid assessments amounted to $461,524.67 of their total hoped-for assessments of $3,502,539.28. Or to put it another way, they didn't collect $1 for every $7.58 they hoped to collect. In real dollars, things get better for 2004, (kind of). While the Diocese missed it's assessment budget by a larger figure, $512,977.50, it also planned on collecting more money, $3,610,903.71. That means that the Diocese actually saw $56,912.53 more in cash when it was all said and done.
On the other, other hand, I can't seem to locate a copy of Olympia's budget, so it's impossible to know if they attempted to hold their expenses down between 2003-2004, or if they budgeted an increase larger than their actual increase in collections.
One way or the other, it's clear there's some financial hurting going on in the Diocese of Olympia. That's why they were charter members of the Red Ink column.
This report shows the 2004 assessment of each parish and mission in the diocese and the amount due through December 31, 2004, and the shortfall, or arrears, of those congregations who have not met their full assessment. For 2003, click here.
