Episcopalians told to suffer for beliefs
The Washington Times ^ | 4/02/2005 | Julia Duin

Posted on 04/03/2005 7:42:13 AM PDT by sionnsar

Leaders in the Episcopal Church and its parent body, the 70 million-member Anglican Communion, told nearly 1,600 Episcopalians in Woodbridge, Va., yesterday to prepare to suffer for their beliefs and perhaps even be ejected from their denomination.

...

Pittsburgh Episcopal Bishop Robert Duncan said conservative groups within the Episcopal Church "cannot deliver a blessed thing" in terms of protecting beleaguered conservatives in liberal dioceses. For instance, he said, conservative clergy at six Connecticut parishes are being threatened with defrocking by their bishop.

"Brothers and sisters," he said, "it will get worse for us."

Agree. This article reads like the conservatives are so passive and there is little hope. ECUSA needs to be expelled. The traditional diocese and parishes need to fight for every inch, including litigating over church property. The current church leadership would like nothing better than if the conservatives simply picked up and left. The ECUSA would then become the heretical, gay, liberal, new age church.

Haven't they already suffered enough by being known as the Church of the Gay Bishop? It's got to be painful to endure such ridicule.

It should be, but unfortunately we're in the company of many other mainstream Protestant denominations.

Those attending the two-day "From Surviving to Thriving" conference...

Seems like the liberals are pushing things from 'thriving to surviving', at this rate.

For instance, he said, conservative clergy at six Connecticut parishes are being threatened with defrocking by their bishop.

Does anyone know the six? They, specifically, need Prayer.

The problems in the AC revisionist provinces go far, far deeper than one homosexual heresiarch living a life style condemned by the Bible. All the hierarchal Churches are riddled with homosexuals and always have been. Being called names is the least of the problems of Episcopalians, or all the rest of us in The Church for that matter. For reasons nearly as old as the AC itself, the heresiarchs of ECUSA and those in Canada have decided to justify their creation of a new "religion" by resort to new age "Christian" semantics and talk of "diversity". The Fathers have always been clear on what we are to do with heretics... pray for them but separate ourselves from them and never, ever, pray with them.

St. John Chrysostomos wrote of St. Paul's thinking, in Homily 6 on Titus:

"By Contentions," he means, with heretics, in which he would not have us labor to no purpose, where nothing is to be gained, for they end in nothing. For when a man is perverted and predetermined not to change his mind, whatever may happen, why shouldest thou labor in vain, sowing upon a rock, when thou shouldest spend thy honorable toil upon thy own people, in discoursing with them upon almsgiving and every other virtue?

How then does he elsewhere say, "If God peradventure will give them repentance" (2 Tim. ii.25); but here, "A man that is an heretic after the first and second admonition reject, knowing that he that is such is subverted and sinneth, being condemned of himself"? In the former passage he speaks of the correction of those of whom he had hope, and who had simply made opposition. But when he is known and manifest to all, why dost thou contend in vain? why dost thou beat the air? What means, "being condemned of himself"? Because he cannot say that no one has told him, no one admonished him; since therefore after admonition he continues the same, he is self-condemned."

"and the added bonus..I learned a new word.."heresiarchs""

Isn't Greek just a marvelous language! "Heresiarch" comes from the Greek word "hairesiarkees" meaning an heretical hierarch.

he and five other conservative Episcopal leaders were singled out by Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold as being "evil."

Good one Frank, way find common ground. I'm just waiting for the day there's a schism, and you'll have accomplished that single handedly.

Same happening within the Anglican Church of Canada, as we all know. Two or three parishes that walked away from the tyranny of Ingham in New Westminster have given up on trying to keep their church buildings. However they seem much happier in new premises and Ingham has the task of keeping empty churches pretending to be full of people.

"Is this St. John of the Golden Mouth? (?)"

The very same...Chrysostomos means Golden Mouthed One. You really have to learn Greek! :)

"He makes perfect sense."

He almost always does. Frankly it irritates me that the ECUSA crowd takes some of his comments out of context to try to condemn those who have broken communion with them as heretics.

So I can add it to German, Latin and Gaelic as another language slowly fading? *\;-) (I'm actually encouraged from time to time to get back into Latin because it's in our BCP, if only for headings.)

Actually, if I were around Greek I probably would learn it. Let's see, let me make some guesses:

"chrys(o?)" is probably gold (not sure where I'm reaching for that...)

"(o?)stom(o?)" is definitely mouth (colostomy - "the practice of having/making a mouth for the colon"?)

"(o?)s" likely a suffix indicating singular, "one" or "the one"

(I did all this without googling or any other reference. How'm I doing?)

Such a smart Xenos! (Now figure out Xenos!:) )

As a classics major in my college days, I recommend keeping up with the Latin, btw! Of course it was a living language back then!

As a Reformed Christian, my general impression has been that if church is going downhill, but tolerates orthodoxy, it is permissible to stay and fight. But if they start persecuting orthdoxy, get the heck out. It has ceased to be a church.

Such a smart Xenos! (Now figure out Xenos!:) )

Um. Well, we have the "(o)s" ending again. singular, "one" or "the one"

Which leaves the question of "Xen(o)" with the added complication of capitalization. (Why am I doing this?? I'm an engineer -- it's my wife who's the language expert!)

From context: it could refer to "person", "non-speaker" or "learner" (Gaelic concept), or even "student." Wait... there's something else coming to mind...

ah! "Xenophobia!" Thus foreigner or outsider or related concept. "Coigreach" or "stranger" in Gaelic (incorrectly? taught me as "one from the 5th province", "coig" is 5; there having been only four provinces, thus "outsider.")

"Xenos" -- "one who-is/from not-here"

And addressing the ending, it must mean: singular or "one" (general).

Still too little information to resolve the capitalization issue.

Do I pass? *\;-)

As a classics major in my college days, I recommend keeping up with the Latin, btw! Of course it was a living language back then!

Oh, really? Well, I was an engineering major... but of course, the field was entirely different back in then. You know, things like moving huge stones and stelae long distances, setting them upright in the ground with manual labor, that sort of thing. (And all done without "as-built" documentation in case you wanted to tweak or re-program the setup! Everything had to be reverse-engineered!) Really difficult field until the Arabs worked out a fantastic new notation. Ever try long division in Latin numerals? Or computing logarithms with counting stones (early calculators)?

We often randomly capitalize words and here it means nothing. But you did a good job. A xenos is a male foreigner or stranger. Its what we call all non Greeks (or non Orthodox or even new converts to Orthodoxy who aren't otherwise ethnically Orthodox). When I was a kid I always got a kick out of it becuase here was a group of immigrants at church calling Americans foreigners! Actually, its still kind of funny! So you not only pass, but get an A (that would be an Alpha)! Now try "Omoousios"! :)
