Purpose Driven Life

Posted on 03/14/2005 10:28:37 AM PST by blue-duncan

For all of you Rick Warren fans out there, did you happen to catch the interview with the Brian Nichols, ex-hostage Ashley Smith? She was reading "Purpose Driven Life" as part of her devotions and read part of chapter 33 to him and then asked him what he thought his purpose in life was. This was part of the discussion that convinced Nichols to give himself up. We should all have her boldness in the face of trials.

A lot of people tend to think that if the masses like it, then it must be bad. Those who run down popular ministries often claim that they don't teach the "meat" and that they only serve "milk". Hey it only took a couple of drops of that "milk" to but the brakes to this killing spree.

I tend to think that if those who are most critical of Warren were in this woman's shoes yesterday and had attempted to feed this guy some of their "meat" that there'd be at least one more victim of this guy's killing spree.

Praise the Lord for Milk.

I certainly do not know where you are coming from accusing me of spamming. The discussion in this read was in regard to The Purpose Driven Life and as I have known for some time that it has been controversial, I thought I would share an article I'd found while trying to discover what the problem with the book was. I am not a member of the organization. I believe you owe me an apology.

A lesson in etiquette young newbie grasshopper. Spamming is when you come on a thread and post a 8526 word (possibly copyrighted) article as a point of discussion. Next time you want to post 8526 words, you should start your own thread.

BTW I have asked the Mods to remove your post. It is distracting to the flow of the thread. Additionally the thread was not about whether Warren's book is kosher, but it was about the miracle that God used this young lady and Warren's book to save lives and end a killing spree. If you are going to make an 8000 word post, the least you could do is stay on topic. :-)

I apologize if the article was too long. There seemed to be a lot of dissention in the thread. I thought the article would clarify what some think the problems seem to be.

We all know what the alleged problems are. Everytime Warren's name is mentioned here the cynics come crawling out of the woodwork like cockroaches in the dark to tell us about the problems with Warren's ministry. Nothing breeds contempt like success.

I've only been here a few weeks. I have not seen any discussions on Rick Warren in that time. So much for trying to be helpful.

Just try to keep your individual posts down to 500 words or less. If you feel the need to post some big article, then start your own thread. Articles are for the top of the thread, not the middle. Quoting from articles is cool, but posting whole articles in the middle of the thread is annoying. Its difficult when you are scrolling down trying to read a thread and you come across some 50 page essay that interrupts the flow.

BTW, the general rule around here is that if your post is longer than about 20 to 30 lines, most people won't read it.

So now that that is out of the way, what do you think about what happened with the lady, the killer, the bible and "the Book"? Did God use her and Warren's book? Or is God prohibited from using popular authors for his purpose?

PTL for seeker friendly churches.

If people are seeking, then why shouldn't we be friendly to them?

The cult-ish, fad-ish devotion to "Purpose-Driven Life." One would think that Christians never heard of the A-B-C's of devotion to Jesus Christ before Rick Warren popped up.

You sound like you're a combat veteran of the Saddleback Church wars.

You'd be growing in numbers and have to have another building program.

"Harper Collins is the Publisher of the Satanic Bible."

I refuse to financially support, as any spiritually centered Christian should, any entity/individual who profits from the sale of satanic materials.

God be with you.

The prosperity minisitries I've seen usually also are full of scripture.
