I've had enough of the ACLU
The Sower | January/February 2005 | Mack Smith

That's it, I've had enough, I can't take anymore of the "ACLU" and their humanistic philosophies. What is the American Civil Liberties Union anyway? Why are they getting away with what they are doing? It is not a government organization, and does not represent the majority of the people. Even so, many of our elected officials and judges listen, and give in, to their ridiculous, whiney demands. Why?

The United States of America is the greatest country ever to be founded. I love this Country and I am still proud to be an American, although, in my opinion, it is not the America I grew up in. And, it is not the America our founding fathers meant for it to be.

I was born in a small town in southeast Tennessee in 1949. I was raised in a middle class Christian home and taught my moral values by my parents, my grandparents and my fifth grade teacher (Mrs. Aldridge, God lover her).

I believe the Bible is the inerrant "Word of God". I respect my elders and always use sir or ma'am when addressing a stranger, even if they are younger than me (which seems to be more often than not).

I'm not too sure about kids these days, but that's just normal "parental" thinking. I'm sure there were times when my dad said, "I don't know about that boy sometimes." I have a great admiration for Teachers, Firemen and Policemen and for what they do each day for our community. We owe them a depth of gratitude and respect (and they are way underpaid).

Now...In 1962, bowing to the ACLU, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Prayer be removed from our schools. Also in 1962, the same U.S. Supreme Court stated that, "Among religions in this country which do not teach what would generally be considered a belief in the existence of God are Buddhism...Secular Humanism and others."

So, if secular humanism is a religion why is it being taught in our schools?

The phrase "separation of church and state" has been thrown around for so long that most Americans believe it is actually in the Constitution.

"Separation of church and state" is Not a law and is Not in the Constitution. It is an erroneous doctrine (the ACLU again), adopted and implemented by the Courts over the years since 1961.

The Constitution does however forbid Congress (the lawmakers) to touch religion. So, if Congress is forbidden to make a law affecting religion, how can the courts be enforcing such a law?

It's almost like they are making the laws themselves, and that would certainly be in violation of the Constitution. No one, not even the U.S. Supreme Court, should have the right to change our country's history or heritage.

Although this Country was founded on the Bible and the belief in one true God, we have the freedom to believe in any religion, any faith, or even no religion at all; without fear of persecution. But, the phrase "In God We Trust" is part of our heritage; if that offends you, well that's the way it is, if you intend to stay here, you should accept it and learn to live with it.

The Constitution does not offer protection from being offended and we do not have the right to happiness. We do however, have the right to pursue happiness, and personally that pursuit would be less clouded if those who seem to be confused by the "Bill of Rights" would stop taking away a freedom given us by the Constitution.

For over 185 years prior to 1962, prayer was allowed and practiced in all public buildings. The Constitutional Convention itself was opened with prayer. Use Your Head People; if the writers and signers of the Constitution did not want prayer in public buildings then they would not have prayed in public buildings. For someone to say that Prayer and Biblical principles should not be allowed in the public schools and Government buildings, well, they're either ignorant of the history and intent of our Founding Fathers, or just totally anti-Christianity.

The "First Amendment" was intended to protect the "church" and religion from government interference. Its writers never intended for prayer, Biblical principles or their influence to be kept out (or forced out) of public life.

Now, having said all that; the "ACLU", in my opinion, is just a collection of Misguided Liberal Extremists hiding behind a misnamed organization, catering to special interest groups that want to force their secular humanist theories and non-values on the entire population, and are resolved to undermine everything this country was founded on and stands for. It seems they are more of an "Anti Christian Liberties Union" than anything else.

That wasn't too harsh, was it? Oh well, I wanted to let my opinions be known before they figured out a way to misinterpret the "Freedom of Speech" part. (Mack Smith is an Athens, Alabama resident and a member of the Athens City School Board.)

So his biggest problem with the ACLU is that it enforces government non-interference with religious life? I was hoping for better.
