GOSPEL Matthew 17: 1 - 9 |
At that time Jesus took Peter and James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into a high mountain apart: and He was transfigured before them. And His face did shine as the sun, and His garments became white as snow. And behold there appeared to them Moses and Elias talking with Him. Then Peter answering said to Jesus: Lord, it is good for us to be here: if Thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles, one for Thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. And as he was yet speaking, behold a bright cloud overshadowed them. And lo, a voice out of the cloud, saying: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased: hear ye Him. And the disciples hearing, fell upon their face and were very much afraid. And Jesus came and touched them, and said to them: Arise, and fear not. And they, lifting up their eyes, saw no one, but only Jesus. And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying: Tell the vision to no man till the Son of Man be risen from the dead. |
OFFERTORY Psalm 118: 47, 48 I will meditate on Thy commandments, which I have loved exceedingly: and I will lift up my hands to Thy commandments which I have loved. |
SECRET - Look favorably upon these present Sacrifices, we beseech Thee, O Lord, that they may profit us both unto devotion and salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth . . . |
PREFACE (Preface for Lent) - It it truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who by this bodily fast, dost curb our vices, dost lift up our minds and bestow on us strength and rewards; through Christ our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The Heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with these we entreat Thee that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with lowly praise: |
COMMUNION Psalm 5: 2 - 4 Understand my cry: hearken to the voice of my prayer, O my King and my God: for to Thee will I pray, O Lord. |
POST COMMUNION - We humbly beseech Thee, almighty God, that we whom Thou dost refresh by Thy Sacraments may worthily serve Thee by lives well pleasing to thee. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth . . .

It hangs in the Vatican museum.
That painting certainly uplifts the spirit. Thanks for posting.
Here's wishing all FReepers a blessed Lenten season.
Beautiful artwork. Thanks for the ping.
Prayers offered for the health and safety of Terry Schiavo.
Prayers offered for the safety of our troops overseas.
Surely one of the most important verses in the bible.
Sunday A.M. bump.
I put a link to it on the AQ links page.
It has been a while since I have been to a Tridetine Rite Mass, so if my question is ignorant, my apologies. There is only one reading before the homily at the Mass? I saw Thessalonians and the Gospel, but no OT, is that standard?
God Bless
p.s. Being a contrarian and frequently cranky, I call it the sermon, and not the homily. [The Homily on the Mount ... < rolls eyes>]
I'd prefer a sermon every now and then. I want some fire and brimestone. I have to come here for my red meat. :(

Good site. thanks for sharing.
It's not an "ignorant" question at all.
It is customary (though not mandatory) to read the Epistle and Gospel in the vernacular. The interchangable OT parts are in Latin and largely adoration, prayers for mercy and thanksgiving from Psalms et al.
Ok, I'm just used to the Novus Ordo model of Old Testament, Psalm, NT, Gospel for the readings. The more scripture the better I think :) Now just need to work on the whole reverence thing.
That's the horizontal Protestant "service" or "Sunday school" model, one of the reasons why the NO was created.
The only reason why Protestants are showing up on Sundays to have someone preach at them is because they've carried on with a disfigured version of what used to be the Catholic Mass.
The Mass actually started out as processions to various areas to distribute the Eucharist to new catechumans and the faithful, before there were mechanisms put in place to offer daily and weekly Mass. The primary intention being a vertical communion with the Lord as opposed to any substantial religious instruction. Education was done through the catechism and other avenues.
