INTROIT Psalm 43: 23-26 Arise, why sleepest Thou, O Lord? arise, and cast us not off to the end. Why turnest Thou Thy face away, and forgettest our trouble? our belly hath cleaved to the earth: arise, O Lord, help us and deliver us. -- (Ps. 43. 2). We have heard, O God, with our ears: our fathers have declared to us. V.: Glory be to the Father . . . -- Arise, why sleepest Thou, O Lord? . . . |
COLLECT -O God, who seest that we put not our trust in any thing that we do: mercifully grant that by the protection of the Doctor of the Gentiles we may be defended against all adversities. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth . . . |
EPISTLE |
GRADUAL Psalm 82: 19, 14 Let the Gentiles know that God is Thy Name: Thou alone art the Most High over all the earth. V.: O my God, make them like a wheel, and as stubble before the wind. |
TRACT Psalm 59: 4, 6 Thou hast moved the earth, O Lord, and hast troubled it. V.: Heal Thou the breaches thereof, for it has been moved. V.: That they may flee from before the bow: that Thine elect may be delivered.

GOSPEL Luke 8: 4 - 15 |
At that time, when a very great multitude was gathered together and hastened out of the cities unto Jesus, He spoke by a similitude: The sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the wayside, and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. And other some fell upon a rock: and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And other some fell among thorns, and the thorns growing up with it choked it. And other some fell upon good ground: and being sprung up yielded fruit a hundredfold. Saying these things, He cried out: He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. And His disciples asked Him what this parable might be. To whom He said: To you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God, but to the rest in parables: that seeing they may not see, and hearing may not understand. Now the parable is this. The seed is the word of God. And they by the wayside are they that hear: then the devil cometh and taketh the word out of their heart, lest believing they should be saved. Now they upon the rock are they who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no roots: for they believe for a while, and in time of temptation they fall away. And that which fell away among thorns are they who have heard and, going their way, are choked with the cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and yield no fruit. But on the good ground are they who in a good and perfect heart, hearing the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit in patience. |
OFFERTORY Psalm 16: 5 - 7 Perfect Thou my goings in Thy paths, that my footsteps be not moved: incline Thine ear, and hear my works: show forth Thy wonderful mercies, Thou who savest them that trust in Thee, O Lord. |
SECRET - May the Sacrifice offered to Thee, O Lord, ever quicken us and protect us. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth . . . |
PREFACE (Preface of the Most Holy Trinity) - It it truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who, together with Thine only-begotten Son, and the Holy Ghost, art one God, one Lord: not in the oneness of a single Person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For what we believe by Thy revelation of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. Which the Angels and Archangels, the Cherubim also and Seraphim do praise: who cease not daily to cry out, with one voice saying: |
COMMUNION Psalms 42: 4 I will go in to the altar of God, to God who giveth joy to my youth. |
POST COMMUNION - We humbly beseech Thee, almighty God, to grant that they whom Thou dost refresh with Thy Sacraments, may worthily serve Thee by lives well-pleasing to Thee. Through our Lord Jesus Christ . . .

Wow!
This gave me goosebumps. Does this fit the Iraqi elections or what?
The painting is a Van Gogh. I didn't know that he actually had a Catholic ministry sanctioned by the church in the coal mines of Belgium. At one point he sought to become a priest.
I have a great appreciation for Van Gogh's paintings, but have never seen this one. Beautiful, and so fitting for Sexagesima Sunday.
Would you be so kind as to remove number 5?
Sunday morning bump.
And reminds me of Provence...
Thanks
keepem'coming!
Also, wonderful pictures of Van Gogh's paintings. I especially like the picture of his room, I think the painting is called either My Room or The Room, but it is very evocative for me. I would love to see the actual painting.
Finally, thanks for the ping and your faithfulness.
So glad you have returned! You have been missed.
Here's Paul in his letter to Timothy:
1 Timothy 2:7
Whereunto I am appointed a preacher and an apostle (I say the truth, I lie not), a doctor of the Gentiles in faith and truth.
The painting is a Van Gogh.
I hadn't seen this one before and I thought I had seen most of his work.
I didn't know that he actually had a Catholic ministry sanctioned by the church in the coal mines of Belgium. At one point he sought to become a priest.
I wasn't aware of that either. Have you any sources or links I can use to follow up on that. I have Dutch friends that I visit frequently and this has never come up in any discussion that touched on Van Gough. How interesting.
Thank you.
Today's Liturgy could be represented in a triptych.
In the center, Jesus, in His boat, on the shore of Galilee, preaches the parable of the sower (Gospel). It is the redeemer Who by His saving doctrine gives life to souls (Collect).
On the left, Noah's ark floats on the waters of the flood (Maitins). It contains the family, which is to repopulate the world with believing souls.
On the right, St. Paul faces sipwreck and "the perils of the sea" (Epistle) in order that all nations(Collect) may hear the life giving word of Christ. So the staton is at St. Paul-outside-the walls, and in the Mass his memory occupies a large place.
- Dom Gaspar LeFebvre
In November Vincent failed to qualify for the mission school in Laeken after a three month trial period. Never one to be swayed by adversity, Vincent van Gogh eventually made arrangements with the Church to begin a trial period preaching in one of the most inhospitable and impoverished regions in western Europe: the coal mining district of The Borinage, Belgium.
Thanks for the ping.
