Father, Abba,
what a gift,
to call you,
who breathed upon the waters
to create light out of darkness,
world out of chaos,
life out of nothingness,
father,
parent,
ours.
O let your name be made holy,
here, today,
in every heart who will acknowledge
your lordship,
the burning flame
that gives meaning
and burns away the dross
of emptiness,
of meaninglessness.
O Father,
today and always,
may we thank you
for the gift
of creating us,
of loving us,
of breathing life into us
and transforming us.
Amen.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters. And God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.
Genesis 1:1-3
Luke 11:2 And he said to them, "When you pray, say: "Father, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.
Prayer ping! Please let me know if you would like to be off or on this prayer and meditation ping
Despite God's formlessness, it's necessary for humanity to have this idea of a "father" i.e., authority figure and law giver. OT, at least, I'm convinced there's something to this.
I think you are right...he doesn't have physical gender, not the Father, but for some reason that he knows, it works well for us to see him as Father....I have read interesting and perhaps true speculations on this, but I personally don't spend a lot of time speculating, or even splitting the theological hair or two...I study, and read, but mostly, I say, with St. Thomas Aquinas, Adoro te devote, latens Deitas....(I adore you devotedly, hidden God) and try to get to know the unknowable as much as he will let me...
Which is why I write prayers and meditations and proclaim my witness, instead of getting into theological discussions... lots of work to do - wherever God calls us.
