Christian Defense Coalition Objects to Secret Service Prohibition of Public Display of Crosses at Inauguration Parade on January 20
The Secret Service prohibits the public display of crosses at the Presidential Inauguration Parade on January 20th.
The Secret Service issued this prohibition in a December 17th, 2004 letter sent to the National Park Service and included it in an approved demonstration permit application sent to the Christian Defense Coalition on December 23rd. (To see the letter go to http://www.earnedmedia.org/permit.htm)
The Christian Defense Coalition was granted a permit to hold a prayer vigil and demonstration at the Inauguration Parade.
The group calls the banning of the crosses, at the Inauguration, rank religious discrimination and censorship in its worst form.
The Coalition will hold a news conference at Thursday, January 6th, at 11:30 A.M. to discuss their plans regarding this matter. The news conference will be held at the corner of 4th St. and Pennsylvania Ave. NW in front of the Canadian Embassy. This is also the location of where they will conduct their prayer vigil and demonstration during the Inauguration Parade.
Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defense Coalition, states, "By prohibiting the public display of crosses at the Inauguration Parade, the Secret Service has trampled the First Amendment and crushed religious freedom in the public square. Simply put, it is religious bigotry and censorship. It is even more troubling when one realizes that it is only Christian symbols that have been excluded from the Inauguration Parade. We also want to make it clear that we will be on the public sidewalks holding crosses at the Inauguration Parade even if that means risking arrest and jail. The First Amendment should be celebrated at this Inauguration...not crushed."

Anyone have any details on which symbols are not banned?
A one or two foot cross could make a potent projectile, if chunked.
Thanks, seamole. I though for a second that religious symbols, other than the cross were approved. Seems if it's a safety measure, the crossarms might be a hazard to other people. I don't think a sign with the cross painted on it would be banned, which is the impression I got when I read the story.
A bullhorn is a potent projectile.
Hubby is on such a rant about this, demanding we call our Congressman.
I understand the concern about things that can be used as weapons, however, I see this as more of an attack on Christianity.
If the concern is truly weaponry then why no explicit ban on large crescents or Stars of David?
REally, the Republican leadership suold be more sensitive to this emerging issue with its rank and file members.
I agree completely. I am SO SICK of being attacked because of my faith, while heathens get a free ride.
Of course, I don't expect the MSM to report much on this.
It's also very nice and accomodating of them to ALLOW wheelchairs, baby-strollers, and cell-phones, eh? See you in the catacombs, bring plenty of candles.
Christians are under fire in America. It's the same script used by Stalin's communists behind the 'Iron Curtain' during the 40's and 50's!!!
How does one properly chuck a chunk of cross?
I'll take an even money bet you intended to use the word 'chuck'. Taking this leap of faith, what statistical data have you found that would lead a reasonable person to believe the symbol of Christianity has been used as a weapon? Have you any source to support your very macabre suggestion?
Do you support prohibiting crosses from being carried by Christians in the presidential parade - given you believe a cross in the hands of a lib homosexual or a satanic Christian-hater can be a serious threat to the life of the president? Would driving a cross into the eye or ear would result in instant death, and as such constitute a real and present danger to the president? You may be on to something here, sinkspur.
Perhaps crosses, which are a part of a habit of nuns, brothers and some orders of priests, should be surrendered if they are within the proximity of the president?
Perhaps possession, size and composition of crosses should be regulated?
Perhaps we should advise Homeland Security to have the TSA ban the wearing of crosses in air travel? The ramifications of this threat to human safety boggles the mind!!!
Perhaps a concealed carry license is necessary to protect the innocent from Christians who seek the privilege to own and wear a cross hidden beneath their shirts???
Government would be derelict if it shirked away from its duty to protect American Citizens from the deadly potential of a cross. I've got to hand it to you sinkspur, you are one sharp blunt cookie.
Well, so much for free speech. Not that it really has existed for a while anyway.
Let's see....can't cell phones somehow be used as detonating devices? Or is it simply that people now have the "right" to annoy the h*ll out of everybody in ear shot with those d*mnable devices?
"...baby carriages, baby strollers, wheelchairs and other devices for the handicapped in use by handicapped persons..."
Well, how thoughtful of them not to make folks carry grandma if she wants to be there. Of course, it is probably just a matter of time before the very young, the very old and the handicap are eliminated from public events (and probably public transportation) if they require such "dangerous" equipment as wheel chairs and strollers.
"The penalty men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men." -Plato
Try finding some news about John Paul II or some scandal which allows them to attack the Novus Ordo .
That's about all that interests them.
Mahoney....isn't that the same guy who wants to see Rick Santorum defeated in '06?
