ONLY 44% NOW BELIEVE IN GOD Dec 28 2004

By Sean Connolly

PEOPLE who believe God exists are now a minority in Britain, a survey claimed yesterday.

According to a poll by YouGov, just 44 per cent believe in God compared to 77 per cent in 1968.

A majority - 81 per cent - also believe the country is becoming more secular, with fewer people going to places of worship.

But among this percentage, 68 per cent of believers and 14 per cent of non-believers, regretted that society was becoming less religious.

Only a third of the 1,981 people who took part in the online survey believe in heaven and even fewer believe in the devil. Just a quarter think hell exists. Fewer than half, 43 per cent, believed their souls would outlast their bodily life.

Young people especially are significantly less religious than older generations, with more than a third saying they were agnostics or atheists.

Among middle-aged people and the elderly, the figure is far smaller, according to YouGov.

One in four who were asked whether or not they believed in God, replied "don't know".

Frightening statistics. I can't see us aligned with a Godless nation like England in the future. At least other faiths have regard for moral issues such as abortion, homosexuality, and family. These athiests are a grave danger to society.

England has been on a slippery slope for decades but this is the worst sign yet of her demise, if this poll can be believed.

Too many un-Godly third world, muslim/arab immigrants.

Time to kick them out.

If anything, 44% seems on the high side. I'd have thought it was a lot closer to single digits.

The main difference I see between the US and Britain is that in the US there is still an almighty battle in progress for the soul of this country. At the moment the godless have the upper hand but the battle is not over.

In Britain, there never was a battle. Somebody released a soporific gas called "apathy" and everyone lay down and just went to sleep.

Those immigrants believe in God, the British don't. You align with the athiests, i'd rather align with people who at least embrace a God even though it may be the wrong one.

I only align with my people and do so by recognizing and keeping the enemy known and disseminated and in my people's counsciousness.

You, on the other hand, seem to be aligning yourself with the islamist enemy by recognizing their moon god.

I know the numbers are likely down, but I'd still like to see the list of questions that made up this survey.

Maybe, seamole. The western philosophy and culture is disappearing fast, being cannibalized from within by self-haters and postmoderns. Homeschooling is certainly a way to preserve Truth as even the private schools have gone limp on teaching our traditions. Although, we've been promised by Our Lady that her Immaculate Heart will prevail, it won't happen without much sacrifice and struggle.

Me too Zack Attack. Nevertheless, statistics everywhere point in the same direction. Although the figures from America continue to baffle me.

The 20th Century has taught us one valuable lesson. When God moves out and takes inalienable rights with him, marxism moves in and the state issues rights as they see fit.

Those people would be included in the 44% who do believe in "God."

Also heed Plato's warning that all democracies eventually end in tyranny, jwalsh07.

Hi everyone. jwalsh07, I don't think there's any basis for stating that. These surveys show a drop in belief from the 70s onwards, and yet socialism has withered much more rapidly. We now have a government that has taken privatization well past anything the Tories dreamed of doing - and for the most part no one seriously considers re-nationalization an option. That's one example of many.

The fact is that Britain's society has changed due to an incredible number of forces at work, and to see that as decline is silly, considering how much better off I am personally than my grandparents and certainly the generations before.

One more thing. If 66% of people do not believe in a deity, surely as long as both they and the minority are free to live by their beliefs there is no cause for alarm. So why this thread?
