FYI, the word "fairdinkum" is a common part of the Antipodean vernacular. It means "for real", "honest", "true". As in "I'm a fairdinkum Kiwi."

They forbad people to teach religion to their children, killed or imprisoned religious leaders, but in respect for the grandmothers allowed a few churches to stay open, and had KGB agents become priests so they could spy on believers...
They figured religion would die out with the grandmothers, but, as Kruschev wryly pointed out, "God kept making Grandmothers"....
FYI: There is probably a religious "gene" in our DNA, so places that outlawed religion have to substitute communism, or (as the French revolution did) churches of reason to fill the void...
