EWTN Ask The Experts: Arlen Specter and Senator Santorum
EWTN Ask The Experts Forum | 11-05-2004 | Judie Brown

Arlen Specter

Question from Lisa on 11-05-2004:

Dear Judie,

I am heartbroken that Sen. Rick Santorum supported Arlen Specter while his opponent was pro-life! I heard Rick Santorum speak this summer at a homeschooling conference and he presented himself as completely pro-life and devoutly Catholic. He debated Hillary Clinton over partial birth abortion. I just don't get it! Has he ever given an explanation for his endorsement of Specter? Is he not as pro-life as he says? I just find that hard to believe after hearing his talk and seeing him on EWTN. I had so much hope that he was an authentic Catholic politician that we can be proud of! Do you know what his reasons for endorsing Specter are?

Thanks and God bless! Lisa

Answer by Judie Brown on 11-07-2004:

Dear Lisa

Politics is the Seantor's life, and though it is true that he is personally ardently pro-life, he is also personally a Republican who did what the White House asked. Very sad indeed, and I might add, not the first time he has gone into a state to work for the election of a pro-abortion Republican.

Dear Lisa,

That is why there is no one in the Senate gym anymore; They're afraid to get undressed in front of each other because they're all wearing thongs, girdles and pantyhose.

Back when, I'd heard all this good stuff about Santorum; he was even at my local Catholic book store with his wife when she was doing book signings before the Toomey vs. Specter came along. He seemed like a solid, decent, good Catholic. Then he supported Specter. That did him in for me, and from then on, I thought of Santorum as just another CIN0-RINO. Toomey was solidly pro-life and Santorum stabbed him in the back. Now when Santorum tries to claim that he's pro-life, against SSM, and is Catholic, it goes in one ear and out the other for me. Just another politico more full of it than a Thanksgiving turkey.

Yeah. Let's all go after Santorum.

Judie Brown is an idiot.

Judie Brown is a Godsend - especially to preborn babies.
Santorum is just another modernist who puts politics before his Catholic Faith.

This is one of the reasons pro-lifers are wrong to vote for nominally pro-life politicians like Bush and Santorum with the idea that a nominal pro-lifer is not as bad as an open pro-abort. Once in office, the nominal pro-lifer will do nothing to make abortion illegal, but will use the power and prestige of his office to stab real pro-lifers in the back.

Once in office, the nominal pro-lifer will do nothing to make abortion illegal,

The conservative judges that Bush will appoint will overturn Roe and put abortion back on the state level where it belongs - and where something can be done about it. Your strategy is hopeless, doomed to defeat and will simply result in the continuance of the current campaign of mass murder.

Santorum is, by the way, not "nominal". His wife almost died because they refused to abort the child.

"The conservative judges that Bush will appoint will overturn Roe"

Ah, yes. The forlorn hope of gullible pro-lifers. There is nothing in Bush's appointment of Texas Supreme Court justices or federal appointees to lead anyone to expect that.

Of the present US Supreme Court justices, seven were appointed by a Republican President, and the other two were approved by a Republican Senate. If you are lucky, perhaps one of two Bush appointees will be anti-Roe. Then of course, the Republicans won't be able to hold the White House forever. When the Democrats reclaim it, they will appoint 100% pro-abortion justices, and the Senate will confirm them. The Supreme Court is not going to reverse Roe v. Wade.

Agreed. I do think it fairly ridiculous of the republicans on this site and in the world at large to all of a sudden be up in arms about the "traitor" Arlen Specter. He has NEVER been pro-life (or anything even marginally good), and would not currently be in office if the almighty "conservative" George Bush would not have gotten him elected over Toomey in the primary.

Bush has his man in office. The blame for all of Specter's pro-abortion words and actions rest solidly on George W. Bush.

Judie Brown is an idiot.

Yeah, Santorum betrays his faith and puts political expediency over principle...

...but Judy Brown is the idiot. Yeah, right.

Even the idiots at the National "catholic" Reporter get it:

(We take no position, however, as to whether Santorum’s vote for Specter was a sin, which, given the logic employed by some bishops who cautioned Catholics that they risked eternal damnation by voting for Kerry, appears at least a possibility. But that’s best left to Santorum and his spiritual adviser.)

I think in this case, the lukewarm "deacon" is the fool, not Judy.
