Just thought I'd test the waters here at FR's religion board. Any other Pagan Conservatives here?
Interesting how much pagan ritual has survived in the Catholic church. St. Brigid is just the Celtic archetype Brigid, patron of Poetry, Smithcraft and Healing. And the May Crowning? Mary, mother of Jesus, neatly filled the void in the hearts of Celtic former pagans forced to give up their beloved Goddess.
Of course Celts (and Britons) have always had a unique relaionship with the Church:
"Oh, do not tell the Priest of our plight,
for he would call it a sin;
but we've been out in the wood all night
a-conjuring summer in.
And we bring you good news by word of mouth,
good news for cattle and corn;
today is the Sun brought up from the South
by Oak, and Ash, and Thorn."
- from "Oak, Ash and Thorn" - traditional song
What a nice thought.

Asatru. Was a Garderian pagan there for about ten years. Too many "hug the Earth" liberal flakes for me to stomach. Needed something that spoke more to the Warrior in my blood.

Two simplistic questions. The profound answers:
[1] Spiritual maturity determines where God's elect are at any particular point in their lives.
[2] Everyone's emotional maturity is different. Jesus teaches the childish, simple, elect at a different rate than the more mature.
That's why shallow mentalities have to be instructed not to judge by outward appearances.

Gosh, whats a henway?
What is your definition of a "pagan"?

Gosh, whats a henway?
Oh, don't patronize me now.....I'm still skulking over that one. I can't believe that not one person here on FR fell for that. Maybe I should sign up on du to pull a cheap one like that.
Well, don't lose sight of your updock.
(sleepily typing) My updock.....Wha....What's updock?
In humor, as in the arts, the classics are still the best.
The general definition of Pagan is anyone who is not a Christian. It's from the Latin 'paganus', which roughly translates to hillbilly. Christianity took root first in the cities, and the isolated folks in the country still clung to the old ways (sometimes to the present day.) The term 'heathen' has the same meaning; "of the heath" (heath = grasslands or countryside.)
Lately, the term has come to mean (current dictionary) anyone who isn't Christian, Jewish or Muslim; the three monotheistic religions that follow the God of Abraham.
My real break with Christianity is that I believe that God and Mother Nature not only know each other, but are husband and wife. I also find Christianity hard to reconcile with the way of the warrior. So I guess that makes me a pagan.
An aside: I now find I need to keep the Bible, Latin dictionary and English dictionary by the computer.
Free Republic: food for the mind.
I find that I turn to different aspects of the Lady and the Lord depending on my particular need at the moment.
Gardnerian Wicca seems to have more in common with the Golden Dawn than the old Goddess religion. And a lot of modern Wicca has been influenced by Dianic tradition- relegating the Lord to a minor supporting role (if He gets mentioned at all.)
I'll risk a ZOT and say you should keep a low profile. Anything other than some kind of orthodox Christian beliefs don't seem welcome on FR.
I hope that politics trumps religion on Free Republic,
but I'm new and maybe it will become more clear.
I first became politically active in the Goldwater campaign. I helped found the libertarian movement by organizing the draft card burning at the 1969 YAF convention that is regarded as the beginning of the libertarian movement. In the 80's I discovered that I am a pagan. I am happy to send to anyone writings that have appeared in Liberty and various blogs. I have also met very nice open minded evangelical christians.
