I recently went back to school and I'm taking an Irish history course. I have a 25 page final draft paper due next month on the history of the Irish and American Irish in New York City and have gotten started on it during the last week.
One of the key individuals I am writing about in Archbishop "Dagger" John Hughes. I have a lot of secondary sources that write about him as a section of a larger book, but I would like to have an autobiography if possible.
I know Richard Shaw wrote a book titled Dagger John, The Unquiet Life and Times of Archbishop John Hughes of New York back in 1977. I could not find that or any biography at the local library, nor the Michigan State Library. I also do not have 4-6 weeks to wait through a special order of a book from Barnes and Noble online.
So I'm throwing a "Hail Mary" pass. If anybody reading this has a copy of the book above, or another good solid book on Archbishop Hughes, I'd like to buy it or borrow it if at all possible, and I'll pay all the shipping costs.
Thanks a lot. I need to hit a homer with this paper.
You could also see if an ILL (inter-library loan) would get you a copy from some other library than your own. But there might be some delays going that route.
Here's the desccription of the $10 copy at abe:
"NY: Paulist Press, 1977. Hard Cover. Fair/Fair. First Edition. This collectible book has suffered considerable damage from damp and is warped. All of the pages are clean and readable except page 152. Cover is also warped, and the jacket is scuffed. But it can be used as a readable copy. The price reflects the condition of the book. Bookseller Inventory #000552 Price: US$ 10.00 "
Sample excerpt:
It is Archbishop 'Dagger' John Hughes who represents this path when he threatens the mayor of New York in 1844, that if one of his churches burn, "New York will become a second Moscow."
Now that sounds like an interesting character.:)
