All satan can do is ape God and His wondrous works. satan never had an original idea ever. In the Passion from the very begging of the film to its ending, Mel shows satan aping one of God's greatest Mary. In terms of art and iconography in the Garden of Gethsemane, satan is dressed as "Our Lady of Sorrows" it might appear -- but near the end of the scene when the snake slithers out from under his feet we realize this is the negative of "Our Lady of Grace" instead of Mary dressed in white crushing the serpents head -- here is the counterfeit dressed in black letting the snake loose -- only to have the head of the serpent crushed under the foot of Christ (thereby uniting both the Garden of Eden prophecy with the Garden of Gethsemane -- just flat out brilliant).
Anyway, throughout the entire film, satan is not being depicted as just a woman or as female. But satan is shown aping the Blessed Mary Mother of Jesus. Mary gives Jesus strength to carry on. satan tries to tell Jesus he can't do it. Etc. Right down to satan's demonic anti-Madonna and "child". We see the hatred satan has for "Woman" as he dresses in drag, and it makes it all the more powerful that Jesus addresses his mother as "Woman".
And that 's how I see it.
