Of course, having it become treasonous is a whole different matter, and I'm not sure there's any historical precedent.

The Jesuits are not unlike the Knights Templar; both once fiercely loyal and devoted foot soldiers of the Church Militant, turned by their own successes and resultant luxury into lazy slobs, dedicated only to money, apostasy and buggery.

Actually, after I posted, I realized that the Templars were the only group I could think of that even came close.

Of course, now the Templars are heroes among the New Agers (there are tours in Spain that take these nuts to visit the sites of Templar chapels).
