The anti-Catholicism of the "National Catholic Reporter"
Posted on 01/28/2004 12:46:44 PM PST by heyheyhey
In my opinion, the NCR (different from the National Catholic Register and from the Catholic World Report) appears to be classic type of a wolf in sheep's clothing. It is the most anti-Catholic weekly publication that I know, and yet it continues pretending to be "Catholic." The evidence of NCR's anti-Catholic and anti-Christian agenda is somewhat camouflaged, so let it be dug up and brought to daylight in this thread.
- Why, and who cares? Under normal circumstances I couldn't care less, but very many American priests and religious read the NCR, and it has poisonously influenced a generation or two of priests. When we see the sorry state of affairs in our Church we should know, for our own protection, where the devil dwells. Many screwy things (most of all the disdain for the Teaching Magisterium) originated and/or have been, or continue to be, sponsored by the NCR.
There is only one FReeper, as far as I know, vigorously defending the NCR, so he is rare and dear - let's be respectful to him.

"That would be the belief that you can know either the positions of a heretic, or his momentum, but never both at the same time?"
That sounds a bit more like Heisenberg's Uncertainty Theology to me.

Thanks! Nice find.
The "National Catholic Reporter" is somewhat mistitled because there is not really much about it that is Catholic--at least not much that supports the Catholic faith as promulgated by Rome. The "Reporter" plumps for women's ordination, an acceptance of contraception, a more "democratic" structure in the Church, and so on. It's all quite predictable: the Catholic variant of the Democratic Party at prayer, although the "Reporter" does not favor abortion.
The last part needs an update.
Occasionally, I come across Catholic websites that feature the NCR in their Catholic links. I always e-mail them and tell what I think about NCRs catholicity. I was successful a few times - the links disappeared ;)
October 10, 2003 -
John Allen on the Pope vs. "Educated Catholic Women" - take #2,
Perhaps John Pauls comparatively enlightened approach to women -- appointing women as his spokespersons at international conferences, opposing discrimination against women in public policy -- is the most one could reasonably expect from a Polish church leader of his generation and life experience.
Measured against the expectations of many educated Catholic women, however, especially in the developed world, the pope has often seemed a disappointment.
Allen doesn't expect too much from the Pope because he is a Pole? What a dude Allen is! I would like to see this dude use comparable phrase for a ......... (fill in the blank ;)). I think he knows what the "career killer" is.
Allen uses a catch phrase, "Educated Catholic Women." Once I went to a discount store with the slogan "An educated consumer is our best customer." The customers there didn't look particularly "educated," but the slogan was nice to any customer.
Allen implies two things, 1. To dislike the Pope is a sign of education, 2. A woman fond of the Pope must be uneducated.

Yeah, I took a peek at it.
Mostly it seemed to be Matatics fans in a group hug with anti-Catholics stirring the pot.
Wasn't sure I had the time or patience for such nonsense.

You're calling the guy who corrected your "Ecce Anus Dei" an anti-Catholic?
I'm crushed.

The National Catholic Reporter is read because it is informative and incisive. You left out that many bishops and Cardinals in Rome will talk to John Allen of the NCR when they won't talk to Paul Likoudis of The Wanderer.
They know that Allen will quote them accurately, and will not berate them in his columns.
If you don't like the NCR, don't read. I will continue to read it, post from it, and comment on it.
You obviously can ignore my threads and my posts.

If you don't like the NCR, don't read.
Classic non-response from sinkspur, heyheyhey.
Let me think of an analogy: there is a clinic where abortions are performed. Now this clinic does provide some community service, even a fellow there who does dental outreach to the poor. There have been many posts about this particular dentist, but your post has to do with the clinic as a whole. Is the clinic an evil enterprise because it commits abortions? And the replies to your post, naturally enough, discuss the diabolical nature of an abortuary. But then you get a reply from a regular poster who more or less supports the clinic, and in his post, rather than engage in the question of the evil perpetrated by abortion, says: a)that dentist is peerless b)if you don't like the clinic, you can ignore it c)I will continue to let people know about the clinic
But sinkspur: what about abortion?

My defense is of the NCR, not abortion. I don't defend abortion, and you know it.

Well, the theology is pretty uncertain.
OK... If I unjustly annul a wedding, two people have each been harmed fully by one sin each, and yet there has been only a total of one sin committed...

The National Catholic Reporter is read because it is informative ... You might be right. Ive never looked for news in the NCR. These days anything related to the Catholic Church is trumpeted from the rooftops anyway.
People are attracted to NCR for various reasons. Homosexual clergymen, liberated nuns with a priestly vocation and anyone who hates the hierarchy and rejects Catholic sexual morality would find it friendly and inclusive. Some may simply enjoy weekly "Pope bashing" and scandals.
This thread is meant to shed as much light on the NCRs anti-Catholic agenda as possible.

This thread is meant to shed as much light on the NCRs anti-Catholic agenda as possible. Which is your obsession.
Your other obsession is trashing me for reading the NCR. You post on very little else.
If you want to counter the NCR, why don't you post something from The Wanderer or the Register or Our Sunday Visitor?
The more ideas here, the better. Rather than tearing down, why not build up?
