The anti-Catholicism of the "National Catholic Reporter"
Posted on 01/28/2004 12:46:44 PM PST by heyheyhey
In my opinion, the NCR (different from the National Catholic Register and from the Catholic World Report) appears to be classic type of a wolf in sheep's clothing. It is the most anti-Catholic weekly publication that I know, and yet it continues pretending to be "Catholic." The evidence of NCR's anti-Catholic and anti-Christian agenda is somewhat camouflaged, so let it be dug up and brought to daylight in this thread.
- Why, and who cares? Under normal circumstances I couldn't care less, but very many American priests and religious read the NCR, and it has poisonously influenced a generation or two of priests. When we see the sorry state of affairs in our Church we should know, for our own protection, where the devil dwells. Many screwy things (most of all the disdain for the Teaching Magisterium) originated and/or have been, or continue to be, sponsored by the NCR.
There is only one FReeper, as far as I know, vigorously defending the NCR, so he is rare and dear - let's be respectful to him.

"fresh information" eh, wouldn't it be nice if it had more going for it than merely being "fresh".
That kind of "fresh" has a certain odor of heresy about it.
As bishop Helmsing wrote via St. Paul: "for there will come a time when they will not endure the sound doctrines; but having itching ears, will heap up to themselves teachers according to their own lust, and they will turn away their hearing from the truth and will turn aside rather to fables." (2 Tim. 4:2-4)

Two ideas that I would suggest is that everyone reading phx_rc's posts copy it and send it to their Bishop asking that they join with their brother Bishop, now deceased,in an act of collegiality, and ask them to request that all parishes and the chancery offeces in their diocese cancel subscriptions to it. There is not much that can be done about private subscribers but certainly no diocesan or parish monies should be used to support this rag. Been tried. Won't work. NCR is the paper of choice in lots of chanceries, education offices, and parish offices.

If the Bishops and Rome wanted NCR out of business, they'd be out of businessThat was true at one time, probably the 70s and early 80s.
Now, however, the number of personal subscriptions far outnumber the ones put in parish bookstands.

If you don't like the NCR, don't read. And your advice to people complaining about air pollution is, I suppose, not to breathe. NCR is soiling the Catholic common space.

NCR is soiling the Catholic common space. Over 100,000 Catholics, worldwide, would disagree with you.

You don't need NCR, obviously, since you've got everything figured out.

Catholic bishops advertise for diocesan positions in the NCR. We know. That's why we're in the mess we are.
That's why we have dissenter feminist nuns and atheist psychologists running priestly formation programs.
That's why heretics like FutureChurch are running their organization out of Church buildings.
That's why we have a homosexual abuse scandal in almost every diocese.
Yes...we are quite aware of the influence National "Catholic" Reporter has had, and continues to have, in the chanceries.

If you don't like the NCR, don't read. Classic non-response from sinkspur, heyheyhey.
It is a classic response ... but one hears it more often from those who insist on defending pornography as "free speech".

=== We can never create anything without engaging our sexuality in the process.
This sounds much like a recent discussion of the Passion which I listened to from backstage while doing work on a set for the local Gay and Lesbian theatre group here in town.
The local Gay and Lesbian episcopal group holds their "masses" there. I'll think of the name ... I'm assuming for the moment it's episcopal but it might be anglican ... it's based in Britain.

They're too busy reading NCR and waiting for the latest poll numbers on "the people's will".

=== Better men than you have tried, and failed, to bring down the NCR.
Fascinating.
As I read your posts on NCR's piddling 50K circulation I knew it would be a matter of time before you lost your composure and Came Out, so to speak, fighting.
I was ready for it the moment you hissed the Bishop had been dead 30 years. Just another bit of wishful thinking your NCR part, I guess.

=== Catholic bishops advertise for diocesan positions in the NCR. Workshops, conferences, and retreats are advertised in the NCR.
This is much like your recommendation to find good Catholic workers by canvassing those who attend Daily Mass.
... only different.

=== The NCR provides much more information than any other Catholic paper.
Possibly because most truly Catholic periodicals confine their "information" (outside feature reporting on the state of decay in AmChurch) to substantive information perfectly in comport with Catholic teaching.
NCR has a "broader view" and is not bound by such dated concepts as objective truth, much less fidelity.
