[history]
For those concerned about their final destination after they die, beware: There apparently isn't a lot of space available in heaven. But if you don't mind the utter lack of oceanfront housing, hell appears to have plenty of room.
This we can discern from the results of a new poll of several hundred Americans on matters pertaining to the hereafter. Barna Research Group of Ventura, Calif., found that when it comes to the prospect of eternal damnation, only a fraction of folks seem remotely prepared for the possibility.

Eric Heyl is exceedingly shallow.

In all fairness, Heyl IS reporting the results of a poll.
He's really not expressing an in-depth editorial opinion as a columnist.

I recently heard a statement of pray and repent as if your life depended on it for it surely does.
Also several Priests who are praying that they at least make Purgatory. At least there are some Priests who still believe in Purgatory.

I think I'm coming at this from a different angle than it seemed to you.
This..."Excuse me, but isn't death the ultimate bad outcome? When you're dead, you don't really have many bad outcomes to fear, symbolically or otherwise..." seems really shallow to me.
I believe that you do have Hell to fear when you die, and you can count me among those who are afraid of that, and who are hoping to at least make Purgatory...although, of course, Purgatory is a final cleansing before Heaven, so if you make it that far, you can make it the rest of the way.

The author of this comes across pretty cavalier about the possibility of eternal punishment. All Orthodox Christians take this matter very seriously. Each Liturgy includes prayer for "a Christian ending to our lives--blameless,peaceful,and sinless---and a good defense before the Dread Judgement Seat of Christ"!Anyone who isn't serious about final judgement is whistling in the dark.
