I hadn't thought of that. I guess I'm disagreeing with the discipline of the Latin Rite.

I disagree with disciplines of the Latin Rite, like allowing communion in the hand. Am I "anti-Catholic"?

How many real Catholics are there? Whatever happend to loyal and humble submition to the Church, the bride of Christ? It seems like many of us are being 'cafeteria' Catholics only taking what we want and leaving what we don't want. Wouldn't the Church be better if we all just humbly sumitted ourselves to ALL of the Churches teachings and followed her who is guided by the Holy Spirit? I know that it would be a lot easier than back-biting and name calling! Then we could focus on what is important....eternity with God in heaven! God Bless!

Mandatory celibacy is not a teaching; it is a discipline, and it is not even binding on the entire Latin Rite, and is not binding at all in the Eastern Rite.

So priests are just celebate by choice???? They could go out, get married and still be a priest since its not mandated, but only a discipline????

It is a mandated discipline, EDC, and you know that.

BTW, when priests marry, they are still priests. They are just not allowed to act as priests.

To disagree with an opinion is to be neither anti-Catholic (since I am one) nor a fool. It is simply to disagree. We are allowed to do that in matters of discipline

But sinkspur, what Bp. Curtis is suggesting is a version of the time-honored principle, "if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem." Bp. Curtis' thesis, strongly supported by objective evidence and not just by anecdote, is that the shortage of priests can be resolved by a dedicated effort by all members of the People of God to advance clear teaching and clear obedience to the teaching of the Church. And, at present (and that's all the farther we can see), the Latin Rite has the discipline of celebacy for priests. If the members of the Latin Rite want more priests, they will have to work within that structure. Anything else is simply wishful thinking and counter-productive. I respect your devotion to the Church and, I presume, all of the work you do for its continued good. But Bp. Curtis is asking, have you, just by chance, dissuaded someone from the priesthood or the religious life as a result of a statement from you, a criticism, even if it were well-intentioned?

I'm working within the structure. I worked within the structure 25 years ago when I left the seminary because I could not commit to lifelong celibacy.

I have no way of knowing. I don't disagree publicly with any Church doctrine or discipline, and never have, to anybody who knows who I am.

FR is my opportunity to give my opinion on Catholic non-essentials.

Perhaps you just wanted the best of both worlds.

Just skip the threads, Codie. Nobody's asking you to do anything.
