No Jumbo Tron at Wrigley, just a hand operated score board.

I love Wrigley Field and the surrounding Wrigleyville. I went up there in the summer of '99 just to see some baseball at Wrigley. I think it's a pilgrimage all true baseball fans should make.

Pat Piper, by day the PA announcer at Wrigley Field.

At night he was the Head Waiter at one of the top hot spots downtown. (The Drake, I think.)

The Cubs go down 1-2-3 in the 2nd. No runs, no hits, nobody left. After 1 1/2, it's still nothing-nothing.
NFL updates:

Denver 7, Pittsburgh 3 (2nd)
Arizona 7, Baltimore 6 (2nd)

I think you're right about him being a waiter. But I seem to remember he worked at the Ivanhoe. I could be wrong.

I now have to hate the Cubs at least 18 days a year ("thank" you, Selig), but that is still a great pilgrimage.

I only hope I can make it to the other old stadium (Fenway Park) before they tear that place down.

Your right Charles,

The Ivanhoe might be it, it was closer to the park.

Neat. Here's a shot from 2 weeks ago when they retired Ron Santo's jersey.

Nice pitch to strike out Lee (I seem to recall the "hollow of the knee" being part of the strike zone, for those of you who thought it was low). Lowell bounced to 3rd for out #2.
NFL update:

NY Jets 10, Buffalo 3 (2nd)

The latest on Ron Santo, from the Trib:

Santo's surgery postponed

Ed Sherman October 11, 2003

Ron Santo said surgery on his bladder could be postponed by as much as a month.

After undergoing a stress test Friday in Arizona, Santo reported that his doctors had some concern over a couple of his arteries. He had a coronary bypass procedure in 2000.

The Cubs broadcaster and former third baseman said on the pregame show on WGN-AM 720 that he will undergo an angiogram and that doctors should know more Monday. He said surgery to remove tumors in his bladder Wednesday has been postponed.

"They might wait a couple of weeks, maybe a month," Santo said. "If they . . . wait a month, I'm definitely going to come back for the World Series."

Santo said he is feeling fine. Doctors, however, want to make sure he is strong enough to tolerate the surgery. "I want to get it done, but they are being very protective," Santo said.

Off the shoe of Zaambrano, but he picks it up and throws out the other Gonzalez to end the Marlin 2nd.

No runs, no hits, 1 left. At the end of 2, it's still scoreless.

NFL update:

Baltimore 9, Arizona 7 (2nd - does this pattern look familiar - an AFC team marching into a very bad NFC team and settling for field goals)
Denver 7, Pittsburgh 6 (2nd)

I only hope I can make it to the other old stadium (Fenway Park) before they tear that place down.

I went there the summer after high school graduation and it was every bit as wonderful as I thought it would be. Do try to get there. You won't be sorry.

Got to see Luis Tiant pitch against Catfish Hunter and Rollie Fingers come in on relief. I had my very first stadium beer at Fenway.

I know what you mean about having to hate the Cubs a few times a year. I rooted for the Astros at Wrigley, but the fans didn't mind. :)
