At Schwarzenegger's 1st party, a who's who of politics
SFGate.com ^ | 10/12/03 | Phillip Matier, Andrew Ross - SF Chronicle

Edited on 04/13/2004 2:44:21 AM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

Governator Arnold had his first Sacramento get-together the other night at the home of campaign strategist Bob White -- and while there weren't any TV cameras to catch the comings and goings, there were more than enough politicos from both parties to get tongues wagging.

I really like what I hear. And even Willie's more of an operator than an ideologue. Arnold can get advice on how to defang the Democrats without making it look like they got the stuffing beaten out of them. I hope we can get that spending cap passed so we're never in the situation that brought us staring into the abyss again.

The DUers are already calling Brown a Bush family crony, so obviously they aren't as impressed with his Democratness as some Freepers are.

Oh, Heck -- Willie Brown knows where so many of the bones are buried -- because he helped plant them. It would be stupid NOT to invite him into the "fold" for his, um, input, IMHO, of course.

"He's very bright and quick-witted, but he's got to keep the open-collar look," Brown said. "He looks like s-- in a tie."

I agree with Willie. Arnold's persona is symbolized by the open-collar look. The open-collar look brought him to the dance. He'd be dumb to dance with some other look-- a look that symbolized Gray Davis and his lifetime as a dorky, boring and beholden bureaucrat.

I'd also add that Maria probably told Arnold the same thing. She told Arnold to be himself-- for better or for worse (regarding his sometimes politically incorrect sense of humor). People think they know Arnold and they like what they think they know-- he's a part of their family (they saw him so much in their living rooms and other TV rooms). He shouldn't force voters to decide whether they like the "new Arnold". It also gives Arnold some get out of jail free cards with the public. If he puts his foot in his mouth, they'll say, "Oh, that's just Arnold."-- like they would if their brother-in-law said something impolitic.

"Hi -- I'm one of those special interests you promised to get rid of. At which point Gov. Arnold threw his arm around the guy and laughed, I lied."

Hmmmm? I don't find this very comforting.

As I surmised, putting Willie Brown on the transition team was a good idea. No doubt the national Rats have patted him on the head and ignored his opinions for years.

He is quite taken with being on the transition team, and will bend over backwards to help...as long as he is considered on of the "in crowd."

Schwarzenegger is pretty smart, IMHO. Getting the black vote to look at Republicans again would be a great benefit of this, I think.

You wouldn't mean like... Willie Brown holding PG&E hostage to "give" energy away to a budding "minority" pal who wanted to start a new business in energy? Johnnie Cochran. Who later went on, of course, to become the Cochran of the OJ fame ... And this isn't even my opinion. It was published in the SF newspapers... Of course, if PG&E hadn't buckled, why the ole' Diablo Canyon plant was "miraculously" going to run into serious "overrun" financial issues through being hit by all kinds of mysterious new problems with the building.. And the voters would be sooooo outraged, no?

... You mean.. the powerstations he and Amos Brown seized from PG&E? Or are we talking about the glass wall and ceiling the Lavender Lobby has built around Willie? :)
