Rush Limbaugh Statement on Prescription Pain Medication Stories
Friday October 10, 2:55 pm ET
NEW YORK, Oct. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Rush Limbaugh today issued the following statement on his radio program:
"You know I have always tried to be honest with you and open about my life. So I need to tell you today that part of what you have heard and read is correct. I am addicted to prescription pain medication.
"I first started taking prescription painkillers some years ago when my doctor prescribed them to treat post surgical pain following spinal surgery. Unfortunately, the surgery was unsuccessful and I continued to have severe pain in my lower back and also in my neck due to herniated discs. I am still experiencing that pain. Rather than opt for additional surgery for these conditions, I chose to treat the pain with prescribed medication. This medication turned out to be highly addictive.
"Over the past several years I have tried to break my dependence on pain pills and, in fact, twice checked myself into medical facilities in an attempt to do so. I have recently agreed with my physician about the next steps.
"Immediately following this broadcast, I am checking myself into a treatment center for the next 30 days to once and for all break the hold this highly addictive medication has on me. The show will continue during this time, of course, with an array of guest hosts you have come to know and respect.
"I am not making any excuses. You know, over the years athletes and celebrities have emerged from treatment centers to great fanfare and praise for conquering great demons. They are said to be great role models and examples for others. Well, I am no role model. I refuse to let anyone think I am doing something great here, when there are people you never hear about, who face long odds and never resort to such escapes. They are the role models. I am no victim and do not portray myself as such. I take full responsibility for my problem.
"At the present time, the authorities are conducting an investigation, and I have been asked to limit my public comments until this investigation is complete. So I will only say that the stories you have read and heard contain inaccuracies and distortions, which I will clear up when I am free to speak about them.
"I deeply appreciate all your support over this last tumultuous week. It has sustained me. I ask now for your prayers. I look forward to resuming our excursion into broadcast excellence together."

I wonder who will be the first person who supports the War on Drugs to explain why Rush shouldn't be convicted & possibly imprisoned.
It will be a sad day for us Real Americans when you leftists figure out that your smug, hateful attitude is eroding support for whatever principles you still hold. The Wellstone death-party, your little stunt with the LA Times last week, and now your shameful Rush-bashing make America loathe you.
Again, don't get me wrong, we want nothing more than for you leftists to BE YOURSELVES. America will know what to do on election day. They showed you what they thought of you in November 2002 and again last Tuesday.
You are losing, leftist.

I found myself getting addicted to Oxy's when I got out of the hospital and Vicodin's aka Oxycodene. You know the feeling that you get when an orgasm happens? Or a rush of excitement? That is what it feels like when you are on an oxycontin. You have this rush in you but all you want to do is chill out and enjoy the feeling of no pain and you can't even begin to feel upset by anything.
To say it numbs you would be an understatement.

Rush states that he's tried detox twice before--obviously for a lesser period of time. I must assume he's enrolling in a 30-day program this time given that the cat's out of the bag. I have no doubt that this is his choice.

I'm probably too late to be first, but I'll go ahead and say that I was wrong. I'm quite surprised by this but also proud that Rush is dealing with it head on and honestly, unlike X42.
He has shown that he is not a liar or hipocryt. This kind of trap is one that anyone can fall into when prescribed these kind of drugs.

I think we have a winner. What a stupid thing to say. He belongs on DU and a premier membership for that statement at that.

Well, I am not too proud to admitt I thought the story was a lie..
Nothing wrong with trusting in someone. Truth is, we are ALL human and can't get everything right all the time. People fail, people "let us down" and vice-versa.
Doesn't mean we shoudn't still be their friend or stop loving them. The good should always outweigh the bad. That's life.

Oh, garbage. I listened to the guy from 1992 on, and only got to where I couldn't stand him about 2 years ago. He used to savage Marion Barry, and if some liberal would try to start programs for junkies, would go into that pompous whining voice of his while mocking problems.

Let's all bug wizzler and suggest it. Why do you presume this would "bug" me? I don't care if you suggest we pray. I just wondered who would be the first to post it. And we got our answer: ThePythonicCow.

The Rush episode is hardest for non-Christian conservatives to deal with. Me, I have no trouble with the notion that none of us live up to others expectations or even our own or that we say one thing and do another. There is only one without sin and it ain't me.
I hope, and will pray, that he conquers this problem. He's at a fork in the road. Hope he takes the one that leads to the Cross.

I have pain associated with fibromyalgia and costo-chondritis but pain drugs give me severe headaches so I just quit taking anything stronger than Tylenol 3. It all depends on the amount of pain. I have read stories of people who have what I have and they are in much more pain than I. God Bless Rush.

I'm slightly embarrassed by all the spin I hear coming from fellow Freepers on this issue. I have nothing against Rush, and wouldn't think anything about this had he not made statements against drug users in the past. Hypocrisy is an ugly thing, regardless of where it's coming from.

Abusing prescription drugs is a crime. Very astute of you, but wrong. Illegally ACQUIRING prescription drugs is a crime but using them wrong is not (once they are legally acquired). However, Rush hasn't admitted to "abusing" just being addicted. He is still in pain.

I'd like to offer a prayer for Rush, his family, and his listeners. I suggest we all do the same. We could start a prayer chain.

Rush states that he's tried detox twice before--obviously for a lesser period of time. I must assume he's enrolling in a 30-day program this time given that the cat's out of the bag. I have no doubt that this is his choice. Detox is different from rehab. Detox, at least when it comes to alcohol, is nicknamed "spin-dry," at least according to my RN sister who worked at a psychiatric hospital. It's usually a 72 hour "get 'em dry & get 'em out the door" quick fix. Rehab is usually a minimum 30 day treatment, if you're talking in-patient. It can be longer.

I wonder who will be the first poster here to say, "OK, I was wrong last week when I said the media was lying -- so he IS addicted to painkillers."
Well, I didn't say the media was lying, I thought they were blowing things our of proportion, and that if he was dependent on painkillers, it was probably the result of his cochlear implant surgery. Looks like I got the wrong surgery. It remains to be seen, now, if the painkillers contributed to his hearing loss, and what parts of what we've read in the press are distortions, or not.
