Open Letter from President Nirschel
October 9, 2003
To: The University Community
From: Roy J. Nirschel, Ph.D. President
Re: Free Expression, Civility and Mutual Respect
Roger Williams University is committed to intellectual inquiry and discourse. Among our core values is a celebration of the liberal arts, service, a global perspective and respect for the individual. Inherent within these core values is the affirmation of free expression as well as civility and mutual respect.
In recent days, a publication of a student-funded organization has crossed seriously over the lines of propriety and respect. In the past, this organization has flirted with racist and anti-Islamic rhetoric. The most recent issue of their publication, the Hawks Right Eye, is pornographic in nature, puerile, mean spirited and stereotypes gay individuals as child molesters, criminals or deviants. The views expressed therein do not represent the viewpoint of the Republican Party or most individual members of the party.
While we affirm the right of campus organizations to hold different points of view and to disagree, the university will not condone publications that create a hostile environment for our students and community.
Roger Williams continues to believe in respect for diversity of opinion and a civil exchange of views as well as respect for individuals regardless of their beliefs, backgrounds, or orientation. As an institution whose namesake preached, for his time, inclusiveness and respect for human dignity, we are a university too busy for hate.

Download Hawk's Right Eye, Vol. 8Check out the publication. Aside from some funny captions, the articles are really not as extreme as he suggests.
He might has well just wrote: "While we affirm the right of campus oragnizations to hold different points of view and to disagree, we will not affirm the right of campus organizations to hold different points of view and to disagree."
It's funny that the president brings up diversity, because on the very front page of the Hawk's Right Eye, we dispell the myth that one point of view has a monopoly on diversity. In fact, all points of view encompass diversity. Diversity does not mean that one must unwaiveringly support special priveleges for homosexuality, it means that both viewpoints are different. If the goal of diversity is to encourage differing viewpoints, HRE is just what the University should be applauding! Although we were unaware of our own supposed 'hate', hateful points of view would be just another facet of that grand diversity.
Unfortunately, diversity has been redefined to mean strict lock-step comformity in support of the left's agenda, or the opposite of diversity.

Our college republicans here is also disliked by the college administration. We have brought important speakers here, who were conservatives, like a Congressman, and the administration refused to meet with him. What's more, Daniel Pipes was here, and only 20 people showed up, because the school was silent about him coming.

While we affirm the right of campus organizations to hold different points of view and to disagree, the university will not condone publications that create a hostile environment for our students and community. Translation: I'll pay lip service to the First Amendment, free speech, and free exchange of ideas, but I'll really do what I can to ban anything that isn't pro- liberal/socialist/communist/terrorist.

The university is tolerant of all except those they disagree with.

Caught the Tammy Bruce ad in your newsletter. I first learned about her through all of the CA recall stuff, and noticed she's on Arnold's transition team. All of the left-wing feminists must be wondering, "how the hell did this one slip through the cracks?"

So True. In this instance, they revere the homosexualist collective. They will browbeat you into "tolerance" yell at you for lack of "diversity" and cry foul at your "bigoted stereotyping"; when in fact they demonstrate a profound intolerance, dismiss divergent viewpoints and fallaciously assume that not abiding a strict pro-homo code that you are a knee-jerk nut with a club, going out to break gay heads.
This is academia today.
