You are right Hildy. Our Rush really needs a big shot of humility. I personally hope for his sake he has checked himself into a rehab that deals with people from ALL walks of life. Not just high bottom drunks/addicts. jmo.

But the irrationality of the sort of people on this thread who defend and praise Rush for his courage, while at the same time condemning ordinary drug addicts shows how difficult it is to bring any sanity to this debate.

These people think they are so high and mighty that this could never happen to them or anyone close to them. Alcoholism/Addiction knows no bounds.

Some would - there are always people on the fringe. Most Freepers wouldn't, I don't think. For myself, if Bill or Hillary had a drug addiction, came clean about it (yes, even if only because they were caught) and took responsibility (and jail time if required for it), yes, I would actually respect them more for how they handled the situation.

It wouldn't change any of the other reasons I despise them... but I wouldn't condemn them for -that-. I would still continue, however, to condemn Clinton as the President that enacted the most draconian anti-marijuana laws ever seen in this country for it's own sake.

You automatically assume that he has a "drug dealer" giving him "illegal" drugs. That is not an established fact at this stage. I'm willing to give the man the benefit of the doubt.

Have you read any of the accounts of HOW he got the drugs? Exchanging goods in restaurant parking lots? Getting the maid to score for him (allegedly)? This was not a case of Rush heading to the pharmacy to get his legit precription.

There is a reason why doctors have to give precriptions in this country for certain drugs. You are aware of this, yes? So when someone scores those same drugs on the street, they are CERTAINLY illegal drugs. If you were caught with hundreds of Oxycontin narcotics on your person, without a legitimate precription, I can assure you that the VAST majority of law enforcement personnel in America would slap a set of handcuffs on you. If you were caught in a parking lot exchanging hundreds of pills of Oxycontin for a bundle of cash, with no doctor precriptions in sight, you'd be arrested.

This, of course, assumes that his housekeeper's story, and the NE story, are based in truth.

I've not heard Rush, or anyone, for that matter, suggest that Rush had a precription for his narcotics. If this were a case of Rush simply taking a lot of drugs given to him by his doctor, all of which were bought at a pharmacy, I could see your point. But that's not part of any story I've read on it, and I think Rush MIGHT have defended himself if that were the case.

Personally, I think Rush should be allowed to take whatever he wants. It's the rank hypocrisy here, with the attempts to minimize his usage, and to attempt to justify his addiction to narcotics by suggesting that prescription narcotics are somehow different than cocaine or meth, that is bothersome. The idea that he had some 'pain' that required buying narcotics off the street... these ideas would never fly if it were Joe Schmo who was addicted, or worse yet, some liberal.

Who said Rush was getting his drugs illegally? What dealers? With doctors all over the country, due to his travels, he may have been able to get the pain killers legally. The physicians would not have checked with each other, especially if Rush paid for his own medications.

Especially in the field of psychotropics, it is clear that these medications are based on speculative (at best) "science" that leads to people becoming zombies after having been permanently left with organic brain damage. Also, what about episodes like thalidomide where women were told it was safe as a sleeping pill and to treat morning sickness, then it was discovered years later that it was leading to birth defects? This kind of thing goes on all the time and there are many examples. For the drug-makers, the money is the thing.

Remember, Satan uses "natural law" to spawn things like pornography, alcoholism, smoking, etc. and the more people who say it isn't wrong, the more he gets his way.

Rush admitted his demons today, he deserves all of our support and prayers, IMO.

He only admitted the use after it was a front-page story. He's allegedly been addicted for years. To pat him on the back for 'admitting' his demons NOW seems weak. Without the story, there would have been no admission. Without the prospect of a criminal investigation, I doubt he'd have come clean. Let's be honest.

In Rush's case, yes. He wasn't under a doctor's care and was buying street narcotics and I might add, supporting terrorism or organized crime with his money in the process. There is a big difference between being under a doctor's care and participating in the illegal drug trade market for feed an addiction.

I think the truth will win in the end. I'm listening to Tom Sullivan on the radio right now. He is swamped with callers who are addicted or who have addicted friends or family.

Rush has brought this debate into the mainstream. This is a good thing.
