Suggestions for a better Free Republic

I was just wondering if any of you have any suggestions for how to make Free Republic easier to use and a better place in general. This is NOT a criticism of Jim Robinson and I am most appreciative of all his hard work. This site is great and I enjoy coming here to learn about and discuss the conservative issues of the day. This is just my desire to see this site become more "viewer-friendly" than it is in its present iteration. I've had thoughts over the years about this and these are the ones that I keep coming back to:
1. Different background colors for alternating posts within a thread, for readability
2. Ability to set up chat rooms for certain events, rather than using the "Live Thread" concept. The entire idea of a "Live Thread" is somewhat of an oxymoron and EXTREMELY difficult to follow.
3. Smilies and other icons available when posting messages
4. Keeping track of numbers of posts by each user. Many forum sites do this, and some even give titles to users who reach certain posting milestones.
5. The ability to mark a thread for later reading, rather than having to "bump" the thread

But why do we need a permanent archive of random thoughts about a Yankees game?
As an example: Wouldn't an avid sports fan in 2003 find it interesting to read a "then live thread" of, say, Babe Ruth's final game? etc. One never knows what will develop as the thread is happening live, sports or otherwise. I agree that FR is not a sports channel, but significant sports events are part of our culture. Remember, it was a sports venue that allowed the liberals to crush Rush Limbaugh.

ALL threads discussing Anna, Ann Coulter, and Britney MUST be accmpanied by pics of the appropriate hottie. This should be written on the front page. :)That's already in the rules, isn't it?

A dictionary works wonders and keeps your mind operating. You might just be amazed at how good a speller you can be. A spell checker gets no credit for good spelling.

Something that flags material from to a copyright touchy source - before it can be posted.
A popup similar to the one that says:
Before you may post this message, the following must be corrected:
Could not find anybody named 'jhccabasc'
Something like:
The source of this article has asked FR to not post articles of their copyrighted materials.
Please limit the body of the text to paraphrase or a brief "fair use" extract and post a link to the source article.

I think a really great adddition would be a series of RSS news feeds. With filterable info so that you could track articles you were interested in, keywords, or replies to your posts.
Oh, and a complete ban on all penile injury stories. Every time I catch sight of one of those on the Latest Messages list I have to run out of my office screaming while trying to spam my mind with visions of cute cuddly puppies, dark beer, and V-8 engines. No more I say.

Limit the number of posts from a single source by a poster within a certain time period. Example, there is a poster who posts daily 20-30 articles from the Washington Times within a thirty minute time frame. I love Washington Times and am a subscriber. However, if I want to read every article from the Times, I go to their website. The single source overload detracts from FreeRepublic.

Agree. A spell-checker would be useful for us spelling-challenged.You can't be series!

This change alone will avoid many of the duplicate threads!
What? And take away the sole purpose of life for a half dozen or so thread cops?
That's cruel.

I have two main suggestions:
1. Change the Search feature so that the default is "order by post time" rather than "order by relevance."
2. Have a separate "room" (non-smoking) for the regular, ongoing, daily forum threads: Hobbit Hole, Word for the Day, etc. When I go to General Interest (aka "Chat") and try to look for the latest individual messages, my screen is filled with Hobbit Hole posts and it's hard to find anything else.

There are good reasons to have an edit button. Your reasons should be part of the list. :>)

We need:
An edit funkshun!
Nooooooo smilies.
More pictures of conservative women on each thread.
To: RightFighter
How about hot linking to a .wav file in a post? That would liven things up.
Or can I do that now?
To: RightFighter
The name of of the "General Interest" forum should officially be changed to "Chat". That is what it is called anyway. There would be less confusion that way.
I also agree that spell-checker would be nice.

ZOT!! Change is GOOD - as long as it is the same as before!!
To: AAABEST; RightFighter
Well for what it's worth I don't like any of your suggestions with the exception of live chat, which we have already and nobody uses. DITTO, CAUTION AND BUMP. JIM HAS THE BEST FORUM ON THE NET!
But I have a few suggestions
#1 On the user page, where you see the users 'state' flag, it would be nice to spell out the 'state'. So I wouldn't have to click again to find out where all the Aholes come from.
#2 Moderator should zap all 'tabloid' posts and 'titles'. Title should be identified as 'vanities' or media/writer source.

I'd like to see a "reply include" function, so I don't have to manually copy and paste, then put in the "italics" tags, then the paragraph tags.

Post Article Function from "Muh Comments"

I agree. I think if you are going to post an article, from any source,it should be posted because you wish to comment on it.Posting, just to post, is a waste of bandwidth.
