Just damn.

If you want on the new list, FReepmail me. This IS a high-volume PING list...

[As i mentioned, the B/C & JD! lists are going to float into and out of whack over the forseeable future, while I try to cobble a rig back together for myself. My apologies for any incovenience or misunderstandings in this time frame. New signups/removals may be flaky in this time-frame as well; please bear with me, and keep in mind you may have to FReepmail me more than once for me to get it done. Thanks again!]

I would like to take a moment to ask for donations.

It should be clear to all conservatives by now that the left intends to demonize us. They don't just disagree with us, they hate us. And worse, they want to get other people to hate us.

Places like Free Republic drive the left batty.

Please donate. Thanks for your consideration.

Authorities said young Werthheimer was last prescribed a two-week supply of the drug five months before his suicide.

Why not sue Gerber Pickles? I'm pretty sure he ate some relish, or a pickle on his hamburger more recently than 5 months before attempting suicide.

I would like to see this company counter-sue the parents; as this looks pretty darn frivilous.

Dear Barry and Laurie,

You sucked as parents. Get over it.

If it's a prescription drug, why not go after the doctor?

147 people taking Accutane either committed suicide or tried to -- a much lower rate than for all U.S. citizens ages 15 to 24.

I would imagine that more teenagers with crappy parents actually commit suicide...

Accutane has helped my family in a great way when no other treatment would work.

To me the risk of creating depression in my child (which I think was very low - if it existed at all) was well worth the reward.

It would be a tragedy if this drug were to be taken away from those that need it.

I took Accutane for awhile in High School. It's a very powerful drug. I had to discontinue because my muscles kept cramping up during exercise.

I took Accutane when I was a kid. It was a harsh drug (pretty much shuts off your oil glands for a week or two), but very effective. I never felt depressed.
Suicide is a terrible, unforgiveable sin committed by those who need God the most. I can't imagine what happens in the mind of a person, especially a young person, contemplating the taking of their own life.

I wish people who kill themselves would do something besides stepping in front of trains, it is quite traumatic for the train engineers

Acutane is time released? For 5 months. They just want the money to purge their own guilt.

Authorities said young Werthheimer was last prescribed a two-week supply of the drug five months before his suicide.

The half life of Accutane is about a day and a half . The drug is not stored in the body. Even with its high risk of causing birth defects at medically low dosages pregnancy is considered safe after one month off Accutane. After 4+ months there should be zero risk of Accutane having anything to do with this.

Was this the same drug the kid, that flew his plane into a building, here in FL was taking?

That kid had just gotten his initial prescription a day or two before and there is no evidence he'd even filled the prescription yet, much less take any of it. Autopsy found no Accutane in his body. The only place Accutane was found was in his family lawyers' greedy claims.

Dr probably told them to read the literature that says it can cause suicidal tendencies.

The FDA mandated written informed consent for Accutane (and its generics) includes many statements on its alleged links with depression and other mental illnesses. These mandates were in place before this kid would have started his therapy. Accutane involves more paperwork and government restrictions than any other drug I prescribe.

Not only is the rate of suicide in Accutane treated patients much lower than in the general population, but also in a better control population, people with severe acne. The rate of depression is also lower in Accutane treated patients in multiple population based studies. Certainly for the average kid with severe scarring acne that has failed all other treatments Accutane becomes the best "happy pill" in the world. It's delightful to follow these kids as their faces clear. Alas Accutane can't prevent all depression and depression can be a serious disease. In 18 years of prescribing it I've had 3 patients become mildly depressed while still taking it. After talking things over with the patients, their families and, where appropriate, mental health professionals all 3 chose to complete their Accutane courses. All had both their acne and their depression resolve.

The popularity of the alleged Accutane suicide link is the result of sad luck and politics. A Congressman from the Detroit area had his son commit suicide some time after finishing Accutane. The grieving parents fixated on the Accutane as the 'cause' of his suicide. I don't believe his case was any more related to Accutane than was this case, but his dad has great media access and sits on a subcommittee overseeing the FDA. Now there is bandwagon of lawyers chasing the issue.

Taking off my Dermatologist hat for a second, if anyone thinks I'm insensitive to the suffering of these parents they would be seriously wrong. I lost a cousin the same way, although he never was on Accutane. I understand what they must be feeling all to well.

Wasn't that kid who flew the plane into the Bank of America building in Florida also supposedly driven batty by acne medicine?

Gees, what a strange world.
