When was his mother diagnosed with cancer? It seems like it was around 1999 but I can't remember. Maybe he was going through the pain of watching a parent die.

This has already been accounted for. His doctors that did the cochlear implant have already stated publicly for the record that autoimmune disease and no other source is responsible for the hearing loss.
Doctors have put their reputation on the line here..
