TOM MCCLINTOCK DAILY EDITION - 10/8/03 - GOING DARK!

Posted on 10/08/2003 7:10:21 AM PDT by Rabid Dog

As many of you know this has been a local, regional, national news and views thread. I want to thank all of you that have respected its intent. When I first started this thead, I was on the fence between Arnold and Tom. Within a week, it became clear that Tom was the man I could respect and support.

Within a month it became clear that the CA G.O.P. was not an organization I could respect and support and so I have switched parties and will be changing my screen name to Rabid Dog.

Tomorrow I am entering Freeper Detox and will be drying out for a week or so but am looking foward to discussing the changes in California under the leadership of our new governor - ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER!!

RR I have mixed feeling about the result, it was good to see Davis finally realizing that the voters do get it. To be frank I wish Arnold had run as a Democrat and then I wouldn’t have to face the difficult decision of getting behind him. That being said Arnold now does have a mandate from Californian voters and I am eager to see how he handles the reins of power. Will he be little more than a poster boy for the Wilson camp or will he be his own man? I choose to think positively and I hope that with some nudging by Tom his fiscal policies will follow the correct course. I do not see Tom being a part of the Arnold team though since I don’t believe that the Wilson camp would want him onboard.

So RR I’ll just say thanks for all your hard efforts in keeping the Tom daily threads going. Our boy was the best man for the job when you started and he’ll still be the best man for the job when you stop. We chose to follow our conscience and that is no bad thing. The Arnold supporters on FR cannot say that he was a spoiler, but they also cannot say that Tom was an also-ran candidate.

So today is a new day and as Tiny Tim would say “God Bless Us Every One”, even the Arnold supporters. :-)

the inability of Arnold's apologists to address the virtually identical positions of Schwarzenegger and Bustamante on the issues

Okay, first issue: taxes. Bustamante says they aren't high enough, that he'll raise income taxes on all but the lowest-income folks by at least $8 billion, that he wants to do away with Prop 13, and that the way to attract more jobs to the state is for its government to "invest more in higher education."

Schwarzenegger says that taxes are too high, that he won't raise taxes save in the event of terrorist attack or natural disaster, pledged support for Prop 13 (and rebuked Warren Buffett for suggesting CA should hike its property taxes), and that the way to attract more jobs to the state is to reduce tax and regulatory burdens on employers.

Whatever similarities they may share on abortion, gay issues, and gun control -- which are important, they don't sound "virtually identical" to me on what most Californians consider the single most important issue.

That is an excellent reason to stay in the Republican party right there! If you can't vote in the primary, you can't vote for McClintock or the other conservatives that you want to win the nomination.

My understanding is "decline to states" can now vote in the primaries since the law changed last year. (I think it was last year.)

Maybe some kind person who is more up on the law can post a link or additional information.

Did she tell you she graduated Summa Cum Laude?

No. She showed me the part of her body where she wrote her crib notes for tests, and the rest is history. (I know, I was weak).

Chad is partially right. We need to retain our best and brightest and work for the future.

Nothing in life is easy, but often the fight is easier in a group, like the Conservative wing of the Republican Party.

For the part that I disagree with - *grin* - I am not a registered Republican.

I work on Republican campaigns, I give money to Republicans and I vote for Republicans. I also vote for Libertarians and I have a little issue with pledging allegiance to a party (not really, but kinda sorta).

Mostly I don’t want the mail – I support those that I want to and I do not want calls or letters asking me for money.

I give no loyalties to political parties - smacks of communism/socialism/nazism. And I have to say, the pressure to be loyal to the "Party" and vote for Arnold has been very disturbing to me

I can't disagree, but I'm only posting in reply to wonder if your initial clause is somewhat at odds with your user name ... ? This is a friendly question, not a jab.

Gee...I'm an Independent and I STILL get the mail and phone calls. Tell me, what's your secret? ;-)

He lost me instantly when he hopped on to the "Should Arnold resign based on the LA Times hit piece?"

That's not exactly what he said. Are you engaging in selective hearing? He said IF the accusations proved to be true, he should resign. And, he also expressed his extreme skepticism about the truth of the charges.

I really think a lot of people are being unfair to McClintock and projecting attitudes and statements which do not reflect reality.

Do you dispute that he was entirely fair to Arnold during the debate and on the campaign trail - he NEVER attacked him, not once, and even gave Arnold opportunities to get by without specifics on debate questions by saying he agreed with Tom.

Please don't start piling on one of our own - let's not hold a higher standard for conservatives (they must be "team players") than we do for mod/libs. And don't forget that if Tom had not stayed in the race, a lot of conservatives would have not had a reason to go to the polls and the recall may have failed.

I don't see Tom as part of the team either. As you pointed out, Pete W. won't want him for sure. I expect Arnold would but I don't think Arnold is in the driver's seat.

(re "open primary")

California had a few years of "open primaries" in the 1990s, but a few years ago the courts ruled in favor of the parties that the primaries must be "closed" -- that only voters registered with that party may vote in that party's primary.

If you want more details, I can scrounge.

That's why the name is going - I'll be Rabid Dog when I get out of Freeper Detox.

Wonder how many other names are going to be changed?

I haven't been following these threads on a daily basis. But was curious what would be here today. Your statement was so gracious in defeat that I just had to tell you that. I don't think many disagree with your premise. And I don't blame you for switching parties. Independent is looking good to a lot of people. Thanks for all your hard work and dedication. Now dry up and get back here soon.

(re switching party registration) I've often toyed with the idea of re-registering Democrat briefly, in years with an incumbent GOP Prez who's running unopposed, such as 2004 and 1992.

Vote Sharpton, Baby!!!

What say? (Technically, one who does this is subject to challenge, but as a practical matter, it's unlikely that you'd have any problem. You just KNOW this happens on the other side of the aisle.)

I have never registered to a party. So they never had my name on the lists I guess.

I get individual candidate stuff when I am working on that campaign and I pickup a copy of the WA State GOP newsletter.
