U.S. Task Force Aids Afghan Hospital

By U.S. Army Sgt. Greg Heath / 4th Public Affairs Detachment

CHARIHKAR, Afghanistan – Soldiers from Medical Task Force 44 Combat Support Hospital delivered large amounts of medicine to Charihkar Hospital Saturday in their continuing effort to offer medical aid to Bagram Air Base’s closest neighboring city.

The TF 44’s soldiers donated two Humvee loads of medicine and medical supplies in what was their second donation run to the Charihkar hospital in a little more than a month.

On task force’s last visit, it donated more than $10,000 worth of medical equipment and supplies, which included a blood refrigerator and dentist’s chair, among many other things.

Included in the many items donated on this trip were various pain medications, antibiotics, intravenous starter kits, and bandages, according to 452nd CSH commander Lt. Col. Richard Haile.

“Sometimes in our supply chain we have an excess of medicine and we knew they could be put to good use here,” said Haile, about one of the reasons why TF 44 was able to the medicine.

While at the hospital, Haile was given the opportunity to speak to some of the doctors and learn some things about the often crowded and undersupplied facility.

The rest of the story

That's why Navy goats are never assigned to Destroyer duty.

Inside the Post Exchange at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. The postcard is undated, but judging from the uniforms, clothing, and hairstyles, I'm going to guess post-war 40's. Notice the open ceiling and rafter beams. There are still a few forts (Huachuca being one such) where you can see buildings like this.

Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) stockroom manager Kathy Ray speaks with a customer at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar. Ray is on her third deployment, having previously worked at field exchanges in Hungary and Bosnia. (Photo by Capt. Sean McKenna)

As you can see, the PX continues to go where the troops are, offering a touch of home to men and women deployed worldwide. Note also, that the 'uniforms', clothing, and hairstyles are slightly different now!

Jinx, you DO manage to bring back memories!

Camp McCoy is now FORT McCoy. It's a regional training base for the National Guard and Reserves. We sent a bunch of our kids up there to learn tactical surveillance.

Yes, Huachuca did have some of these old matchboxes when I was out there, too. Fort Knox has a few of the last "Splinter Village" buildings.

Y'all want Trivia? The James Bond movie, "Goldfinger", has scenes where Splinter Village is shown - those buildings ARE STILL STANDING TODAY, used as trainee barracks.

Most of our splinter village buildings have either burned down (remember the old hospital fire?) or have been torn down to make way for modernization.

About all that's left are the old cavalry barracks at the mouth of Huachuca Canyon and the old commisary that was converted to the clothing sales store that is now office space for the Post Engineers.

It's good to hear that we're making use of Fort McCoy. There are a lot of old installations that can be reused for training becuase of the amount of land available. This also gives a bit of a boost to the economic health of these locales!
