Thats the incident I spoke of ..........They "alledgedly" are the ones that burn gringos out who try and build new homes near there. Land grants are hot issues in NM.

I just looked at the Voz de Aztlan website: they look like a wing of the PLO! It would be amazing if there were some deep hidden Spanish Jewish roots!
If I "get famous" I'll certainly have freepers over for sailboat rides and cocktails! I'm only 999,000 short of a million seller.

It sounds like there are still glowing embers of resentment to blow into flames in NM. In my book, hackers rig the "touchscreen" voting machines to give the election the radicals. "Advisors" from Cuba, Peru and Colombia slip in to help the revolution. Washington is too busy with foreign wars and burning cities to dedicate any effort to the "backwater" of Nuevo Mexico. I think it works as a novel. "Kosovo USA."

There was a caller (with NY accent) to the Sunday AM real estate show on 770 KOB a few years back who was going off about how their tires got slashed everytime they went to "their" land in Chilili. The show host said "I have to do business in this state, and I've got kids." and hung up.

That's a good retelling of the events--that is the story I have always heard. Northern NM is still, thank God, a pretty wild and lawless place.
I know some folks in Canjilon and go elk hunting up there nearly every year. Before I go up there, my local friends have to tell all their pals: "Hey, there'll be a big gringo up here, but he's OK. Don't give him a hard time." (meaning, of course, "Don't run him off the road or shoot him...") The family I stay with up there can trace their history back 250 years in the same area.
They have no love for the 'Floristas'-- Forest Service (kind of slang for 'homosexuals') and the 'Jotas'--Fish and Game (kind of slang for 'homosexuals').
They've essentially been hunting, fishing and living off game for 250 years--managing the game. They don't see why folks can tell them where to hunt and where not to hunt, or why they have to pay for it. Read 'The Milagro Beanfield War' to see a fictionalized version of the fight for Northern NM--heck, it's even a great movie....
You are going to learn an amazing amount about revolution, dirty politics and armed resistance if you study NM history. I'm already looking forward to your book!
Viva El Tigre del Norte.

LMAO........Chilieeee was and still is a dangerous place. As to glowing embers of hate. Try bonfires Travis. They don't call the law they take care of problems and people they don't want there themselves. Pigs eat good there alledgedly.
That book is gonna be real interesting if it highlights places such as this.......Stay Safe

Hey gang, I have an idea. I'm going to bookmark this thread for a resource, and if you come across good NM links or stories, post them to me here.
This is going to be a great story, with Ranya and the FBI agent trapped in the middle of the NM civil war. Very complex, there will be no side with clean hands, and heros and villains will be mingled en la luch libre.

Agree.......aclimation was something I mandated for my troops. We went from 105-115 degree heat in Great Salt Lake region of Utah near Wendover (Eagle Range) where we'd been walking every inch of the ranges conducting a surface range clearance for UXO's. This was in Jun/July of 90. Aug 2, 90 Saddam kicked in the door to Kuwait. We arrived in the UAE on the 8th of Aug thinking were were "aclimated" to sun/heat/dry desert.
At 0300L it was 120 degrees on the ramp when we climbed off our C-130. First few days we hid like rats from the heat and oven like sun. After about 3 or 4 days we started running & PT at night to minimize the effects. It still dropped a few of my troops and me with heat related stress and such.
Mother Nature will kick ya in the nads if ya don't respecte her 24/7.

Remember when Davis was shot by local poachers No!--What's the story on that?
Poaching?! In Northern NM?
A 'poacher' is someone who's not a native to the area. LOL...
I asked some locals about Game and Fish up there and they said: "No, we ain't seen them too much since somebody shot the lights off their trucks..."
Or my favorite: "Hey Vatos! They gots one of those fake deer over on the mesa! Let's go shoot it up!"
To: chookter
Stevenson Ranch up on a dead end near Lindrith. His brother in law Davis saw lights one night on his property. He and his wife went to investigate in their truck and saw a jeep with two "locals" spotting for elk. Davis told em to get the hell off his land and they shot him with a 06 thru his truck door. Died in his wifes arms right there. They knew the shooters as they were local poachers (mexicans) who had histories of crime up there.
They tried the two and they walked............free. They were so sure of themselves they didn't care if Davis's wife saw em or not. They let her live and stand as a witness. They just drove away laughing alledgedly.

Holy cow....
Going out after dark and chasing down local poachers after dark here is suicide--unless you do it like the South African game police with air support and a QRF in back up.
Better off to talk to the guys dads and uncles if you are in good with them.
If you aren't in good, a few elk taken on your land isn't worth your life...

The academic side of things. This guy is a staffer at UNM. Check out the History and Culture link, it will provide lots of names, etc to cross reference.
PS: When you see it spelled AlbuRquerque, you've got a live one.

Better off to talk to the guys dads and uncles if you are in good with them. And you should be, anywhere, if at all possible.
If you aren't in good, a few elk taken on your land isn't worth your life... Is the matter of just whose land it is still a matter of contention?
