That's a good retelling of the events--that is the story I have always heard. Northern NM is still, thank God, a pretty wild and lawless place.

I know some folks in Canjilon and go elk hunting up there nearly every year. Before I go up there, my local friends have to tell all their pals: "Hey, there'll be a big gringo up here, but he's OK. Don't give him a hard time." (meaning, of course, "Don't run him off the road or shoot him...") The family I stay with up there can trace their history back 250 years in the same area.

They have no love for the 'Floristas'-- Forest Service (kind of slang for 'homosexuals') and the 'Jotas'--Fish and Game (kind of slang for 'homosexuals').

They've essentially been hunting, fishing and living off game for 250 years--managing the game. They don't see why folks can tell them where to hunt and where not to hunt, or why they have to pay for it. Read 'The Milagro Beanfield War' to see a fictionalized version of the fight for Northern NM--heck, it's even a great movie....

You are going to learn an amazing amount about revolution, dirty politics and armed resistance if you study NM history. I'm already looking forward to your book!
