The New York Times' vitriolic columnist Krugman claimed a few days ago that some aide to a Republican Congressperson told him that the Republican strategy in this affair was "slime and defend." I suspect that is something Krugman simply made up, but perhaps some RINO Congressman's staff includes a Democrat who wants to hurt Bush.

"Enter 'Shallow Throat', perhaps an anti-Bush mole in the bitterly divided Company (C.I.A.) or at the Fudge Factory (State)."I LOVE Safire's way with words! Gotta remember to use that to reference leakgate.

The most "dastardly" (to borrow the "mot du jour" from the Democrat talking points) leak in recent months was not Mrs. Wilson's identity. It was the information that some anti-(Iraq)war activist within the State or Defense Department leaked concerning our military's plan for simultaneous invasions of Iraq through Kuwait, Jordan and Turkey. The unauthorized leak of this information created a firestorm of public protest in Turkey which caused the Ankara government to renege on an agreement to allow the US 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized) to pass through their territory. At the time, Secretary Rumsfeld "called out" the leaker (or leakers), but that went little noted or long remembered by the press and Democrats. The inability of the 4 ID to stage from Turkey prolonged the war, and enabled the Iraqi leadership to evacuate Baghdad to organize the resistance in the "Sunni Triangle".

...Enter "Shallow Throat," perhaps an anti-Bush mole in the bitterly divided Company (C.I.A.) or at the Fudge Factory (State). Just as the Post reporters will never reveal who their "senior administration official" is, Novak will never reveal who his "two senior administration officials" are...I thought "Fudge Factory" was Bawney Fwank's house.
