When my doctor, my nutritionist, dieticians I have spoken with, and future examination of the Atkins diet tells me that it's beneficial, I'll agree. That is my sense of scientific inquiry. Or do you suppose that the Harvard study and other advocates of Atkins is the be-all end-all? That is not scientific inquiry. And, mostly everyone on the planet- - -well, at least in civilized countries knows that junk food, fast food, processed food, and overeating without exercise is the cause of obesity which in turn brings about the conditions for heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. I don't have those problems because I don't eat that way. I'm advocating that people eat sensibly and exercise. You find that amusing? I don't believe Atkins is eating sensibly.
I'm not going to beat a dead horse with this and I'm certainly not going to change my mind. If you think this is "too funny" then that is your prerogative.

My cholesterol went down 60 points.

On this diet, you can't cheat. One day with lots of carbs will set you back a week. Several days with lots of carbs and you will gain weight.

If you plan to cheat from time-to-time, look for another diet. This doesn't work like Weight Watchers. You can't bank your carbs.

Well I ditched the apple last night at work and decided to start "liking" cantelope......I'll cut it up in chunks and have that.....Also strawberries.....I used to love eating them frozen anyway......So far I really haven't had a one day "binge" on carbs.....Also when I eat frozen entree's I throw out the rice/pasta.....something I never did before......my cholesterol is low I was worried that it would go up.....Sounds like you and "Atkins" are a match made in heaven!!!!!!!!

Not to be rude, but I can't for the life of me understand why you stay on this thread. You have stated your position over and over and about 98 per cent of the posters disagree with you, so why keep shovelling sand against the tide?

I keep "shoveling" because people keep on posting to me. Did you check? As I stated in my last post to Narses, I don't want to beat a dead horse. Did you read that? Narses sent me 3 posts in a row a few days after I thought I stated my position. Am I supposed to just ignore that? As far as I'm concerned, the discussion of this issue is over...unless you or others want to keep on posting to me. I thought I made my feelings sufficiently clear a while back.

Just bookmarking this post so I can print out a couple of recipes later.

I took my Maine Coon kitty to the vet this morning - she is overweight (she shouldn't weigh more than 13 pounds, and she weights about 15). The vet said she needs to go on kitty Atkins diet. That means no dry food, too high in carbs. Just feed her wet food twice a day - Friskies, or Fancy Feast. Atkins for cats! Oh my...

I physically FEEL better if I do not drink that cola, and eliminate other sugars from my diet.

What are you allowed to drink on the Atkins diet? Everything drinkable has sugar in it.

Good old H2O is the best thing to drink while on any diet. Not only should you drink nothing but water, but you should drink a lot of it. Atkins also tells you to stay away from any beverage with caffiene, regardless of the sugar content.

Well first of all, let me clarify that I'm not on Atkins and never was. What I have done is very similar however which is why I participate in the threads.

I drink about 50oz of plain water a day (more on hot summer days) and occasionally, I'll have a sports drink like Propel Water (made by Gatorade) which doesn't have as much sugar as most. I have beer and wine which admittably contains sugars (or at least is processed into sugar in the case of beer). But I don't consider a glass of beer anywhere near the sugar content of a glass of soda - which I avoid totally.

Now that the cold weather is upon us, I drink coffee and tea flavored with Splenda, which many on these threads prefer to the other artifial sweeteners out there. Personally, I can't stand the taste of aspartame or Nutraweet. But Splenda tastes just like real sugar to me.

Thanks! I am now 15 pounds less than even that picture, which was taken at the end of September. I expect to be at my target weight by the end of the year at which time I'll update the picture on my profile. I've only got about 10 pounds to go - if that.

What bugs me now is the folds of skin on my belly where all my fat used to be. I can still pinch several inches down there because my skin hasn't shrunk fast enough to cover my new body.

I've never tasted Splenda, so I googled it. Some sites say there are no side-effects. Other sites, like the following, have a whole list:

Dr. tells of Splenda dangers

The side-effects seem to be as bad as aspartame. Sorry to ruin your day!

Don't worry about it. Already been there and done that. In my opinion, it's still the lesser of the evils and as such, I don't use it a whole lot.

 LowCarb SnowCrab Bisque
  • 4 pounds snow crab clusters (legs)
  • 4 quarts water (16 cups)
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 1/2 stalks celery, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, quartered
  • 2 potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 1/4 cup fresh chopped Italian parsley
  • 2 tsp mustard seed
  • 1 Tbls chopped pimento
  • 1/2 teaspoon coarse ground pepper
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1/3 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 Tbls half and half
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 tsp thyme
  • 1/8 tsp basil
  • 1/8 tsp marjoram
1) Remove all the crab meat from the shells and set it aside.
2) Put half of the shells into a large pot with 4 quarts of water over high heat. Add onion 1 stalk of chopped celery, and garlic, then bring mixture to a boil. Continue to boil for 1 hour, stirring occasionally (The white part of the shells will start to become transparent), then strain stock. Discard the shells, onion, celery and garlic, keeping only the stock.
3) Measure 3 quarts (12 cups) of the stock into a large sauce pan or cooking pot. If you don't have enough stock, add enough water to make 3 quarts.
4) Add potatoes, bring mixture to a boil, then add 1/2 of the crab and the remaining ingredients to the pot and bring it back to boiling. Reduce heat and simmer for 4 hours, uncovered until it reduces by about half and starts to thicken. Add the remaining crab and simmer for another hour until the soup is very thick.
Makes 4-6 servings
