Could allegations derail Schwarzenegger's juggernaut?

Dan Walters: Could allegations derail Schwarzenegger's juggernaut?
By Dan Walters -- Bee Columnist - (Published October 3, 2003)
Just as two statewide polls indicated that Gray Davis' governorship was doomed and that movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger was the prohibitive favorite to succeed him, the long-rumored bomb about Schwarzenegger's personal conduct toward women was dropped Thursday -- a Los Angeles Times article alleging that he had often groped women.
Schwarzenegger adopted the much-used "modified limited hangout" response that first arose during the Watergate scandal. He denied the specific allegations and termed the Times report "trash politics" but admitted that he had sometimes "behaved badly" on movie sets, apologized and pledged to be "a champion for women." The article appeared just as the GOP gubernatorial front-runner was beginning a four-day bus caravan up the state....

More Californians declining party affiliation (Dems losing numbers, Republicans gaining)
SF Chron ^ | 10/4/2003 | Zachary Coile
Posted on 10/04/2003 12:56 AM PDT by BurbankKarl
More Californians are registered to vote for the recall election than were registered last November when Gov. Gray Davis won re-election -- but unfortunately for the incumbent Democrat, far fewer of them are Democrats.
The Democratic Party lost nearly a full percentage point in registration in the last year -- dropping from 44.6 percent to 43.7 percent of the state's electorate -- as more Californians choose to become "decline-to-state" or independent voters, according to new figures released Friday by the secretary of state's office.
The Republican Party also saw a slight increase in registration -- from 35.2 percent to 35.3 percent -- but in a state the size of California, that translates to about 50,000 new voters....

Davis Busy Filling Vacancies and Judgeships Just in Case (and Orders Document Shredding Companies)
NY Times ^ | 10-4 | NY Times
Posted on 10/04/2003 1:27 AM PDT by ambrose
[snip]
The rush to fill the state posts reflects of a broader political reality that has permeated Democratic circles for months. Known by some as Plan B, Davis administration officials and other Democrats are following a "just-in-case" road map of sorts, one that assumes the worst and that involves moving quickly on appointments, important pieces of legislation and other state business.
A team of Mr. Davis's lawyers has gone so far as to research state law to determine that should he lose the recall, Mr. Davis can still sign bills until a new governor is sworn in, which could take several weeks if the vote tally is disputed....

Arnold Unplugged - It's hasta la vista to $9 billion if the Governator is selected

Arnold Unplugged - It's hasta la vista to $9 billion if the Governator is selected Friday, October 3, 2003 E-Mail Article Printer Friendly Version
It's not what Arnold Schwarzenegger did to the girls a decade back that should raise an eyebrow. According to a series of memoranda our office obtained today, it's his dalliance with the boys in a hotel room just two years ago that's the real scandal.
The wannabe governor has yet to deny that on May 17, 2001, at the Peninsula Hotel in Los Angeles, he had consensual political intercourse with Enron chieftain Kenneth Lay. Also frolicking with Arnold and Ken was convicted stock swindler Mike Milken.
Now, thirty-four pages of internal Enron memoranda have just come through this reporter's fax machine tell all about the tryst between Maria's husband and the corporate con men. It turns out that Schwarzenegger knowingly joined the hush-hush encounter as part of a campaign to sabotage a Davis-Bustamante plan to make Enron and other power pirates then ravaging California pay back the $9 billion in illicit profits they carried off.
Here's the story Arnold doesn't want you to hear. The biggest single threat to Ken Lay and the electricity lords is a private lawsuit filed last year under California's unique Civil Code provision 17200, the "Unfair Business Practices Act." This litigation, heading to trial now in Los Angeles, would make the power companies return the $9 billion they filched from California electricity and gas customers....

A FUTURE OF ELECTION FRAUD
New York Post ^ | October 4, 2003 | ARNOLD AHLERT
Posted on 10/04/2003 3:21 AM PDT by sarcasm
October 4, 2003 -- IF Californians are "lucky," the Oct. 7 recall election may be the last one in which the citizens of California decide their own destiny.
Why? Consider this from the "Easy Voter Guide": You don't need an address to vote. You can put down the two cross streets near where you live; the "motor voter bill" allows simultaneous registration for drivers' licenses and voting; the L.A. Registrar of Voters says a license is the only official document needed to register to vote.
And not enacted in time for the recall is the law allowing illegals to obtain drivers' licenses. All of which makes massive vote fraud in the Golden State a genuine possibility in the future. But since the winner of the election will need only a plurality rather than a majority vote to prevail, it is possible even a small amount of fraud could determine the outcome this time around as well.
How has it come to this? Have Californians had enough of this nonsense? Have Americans? ....

FEMALE FANS FLOCK TO ARNOLD DESPITE GROPE FLAP
New York Post ^ | 10/04/03 | DAVID K. LI
Posted on 10/04/2003 5:36 AM PDT by kattracks
October 4, 2003 -- Mobbed by a throng of adoring female fans, Aronld Schwarzengger yesterday tried to terminate charges he groped women and damired Adolf Hitler. declaring California voters "know what my character is." "They've seen my work over the past 20 years," Schwarzenegger told reporters in Arcadia, Calif., citing his work with the Special Olympics and the Inner City Games.
A day after apologizing for "bad behavior" toward women, the superstar actor told a crowd of more than 1,000, "I will always stay focused because the fight continues."
As some anti-Arnold protesters sarcastically shouted the Nazi slogan "Sieg Heil," the Terminator's supporters held up signs reading, "Gray Davis groped me . . . while reaching for my wallet." ....

Will California survive Arnold? Vague policies fail to hamper bid for governor's seat
National Post ^ | October 4, 2003 | Kelly McParland
Posted on 10/04/2003 6:14 AM PDT by billorites
Arnold Schwarzenegger's biggest body count was in Commando, a 1985 film in which he played Colonel John Matrix and had only hours to rescue his kidnapped daughter after an evil dictator spirited her away. A hundred people, no doubt all villains, got what was coming as he tracked her down.
Nobody has died yet in the action hero's quest to become governor of California, but Mr. Schwarzenegger is learning that politics in California is no less of a blood sport than Hollywood movie-making....

White flag vanity: Will/should McClintock be offered a BIG post in Arnold's administration?

I say yes. If there's bad blood, it's no more than between Bush Sr. and Reagan after the 1980 primaries. Remember Bush Sr. talked of REagan's "voodoo economics". McClintock has pulled his punches re. Arnold; he didn't fire at him at the debate. McClintock has elevated the issues discussion and kept Arnold from straying too far left.
Besides that, we could USE McClintock's expertise in a high budget and policymaking post....

Put past to rest, Hatch says of Arnold
Salt Lake Tribune ^ | October 04, 2003 | Christopher Smith

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Orrin Hatch says Arnold Schwarzenegger should not be judged on past improper advances towards women but as the devoted husband he is today, adding that the foreign-born GOP candidate for California governor also should have the opportunity to run for president under a constitutional amendment Hatch is pushing.
"We have to look at people who they are today, not what they may have done wrong in the past," Hatch told the National Press Club Friday. "There isn't a person in this room or anywhere else in the world who is perfect, who has lived perfectly." ....

Libertarians endorse GOP's McClintock!
WorldNetDaily ^ | October 4, 2003 | Steve Kubby
Posted on 10/04/2003 9:12 AM PDT by TERMINATTOR
A strange thing is happening in California politics: The GOP is turning its back on a popular, conservative Republican to support a Hollywood actor who opposes nearly every social issue the Republicans claim to stand for.
Meanwhile, Libertarians across the state of California are making an unprecedented exodus from the Libertarian party's candidate and instead supporting California state Sen. Tom McClintock, a conservative Republican. Nothing like this has happened before in the Libertarian Party and it speaks volumes about the character and integrity of Tom McClintock.
Why is McClintock attracting so much attention from the "Party of Principle"? It's because McClintock is the only candidate who is prepared to veto the reckless spending spree that has overtaken Sacramento.....

AP Exclusive: Schwarzenegger helped disrupt Nazi gatherings
AP ^ | 10/4/03 | VANESSA GERA
Posted on 10/04/2003 6:27 AM PDT by Mark Felton
(10-04) 06:04 PDT GRAZ, Austria (AP) --
Inspired by a weight trainer who witnessed Nazi slayings of Jews during World War II, Arnold Schwarzenegger used his menacing muscular physique to help break up neo-Nazi rallies as a teenager, his ex-trainer said Saturday.
In an interview with The Associated Press, gym owner Kurt Marnul said the young Schwarzenegger participated at least twice in organized disruptions of Nazi gatherings near his hometown of Graz during the 1960s.
Marnul, 74, recounted how he personally saw Nazi soldiers kill three people, two of whom were Jews and one of whom was a young boy, and that the experience motivated him to break up neo-Nazi rallies later in life.
He told AP he described his experiences to Schwarzenegger, who was about 17 at the time, and said the young bodybuilder reacted with shock and anger. He said Schwarzenegger, whose late father served as a voluntary member of the notorious Nazi storm troops, said such horrors had never been discussed at home.
"He was so outraged -- so filled with rage against the Nazi regime," Marnul said.
Marnuls's account came as the film star and California gubernatorial hopeful struggles to counter allegations that he once expressed admiration for Hitler's rise to power from humble beginnings.
Schwarzenegger has said he did not recall making such a remark and called the Nazi leader a "disgusting villain." ....

FRESNO, Calif. (Reuters) - Like a film superhero who miraculously survives knife, gun and grenade attacks, actor Arnold Schwarzenegger was still going strong in his campaign to become California governor Saturday after battling back allegations of sexual misconduct and Nazi sympathies.
As enthusiastic crowds greeted the ex Mr. Universe on his bus tour across the state that ends in Sacramento Sunday, the Republican front-runner wondered aloud why he was facing attacks on his past behavior and statements in the final days of what many have called an extraordinary political circus....
