Voters favored recalling Gov. Gray Davis by a large margin in a Los Angeles Times poll released Tuesday and Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger was ahead of Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, a Democrat.

It was the second recent statewide survey to show Davis badly behind and Schwarzenegger in the lead. There is a week to go until the Oct. 7 election.

Interesting all the polls are coming up with pretty much similar numbers.

For whatever reason, you're post to me was pulled, but I did see it on the "My Comments" screen. Not only did you keep up the name-calling, but you posted an excerpt calling McClnitock supporters "obtuse" and "unsophisticated". Talk like that ain't gonna help things, son, especially when several of the powers-that-be on this board are "obtuse" and "unsophisticated" as y'all like to say.

There's been a lot of damage. The animosity expressed here has been (still is) breathtaking in its scope and severity.

I remain resentful toward the out-of-state vitriolic and vociferous McNader supporters, because it's a game to them, but not to me.

I think, Arne Fufkin has expressed the sentiments of Arnold supporters, and I think you will see our point and perhaps you might even agree with us:
Anyone who is so obtuse or unsophisticated to not understand that without electoral success and political office, principles and ideologies cannot be protected, won and codified, aren't worth the time of day.

"McNader?" "Obtuse or unsophisticated?" "Aren't worth the time of day?"

Thanks for the double-portion of homegrown and out of state pro-Schwarzenegger vitriol.

.

Will the Greens have a big show at the election?
Early in the campaign, Camejo had an unofficial pact with Huffington calling for one of the two candidates to drop out if the other appeared close to victory.

Camejo said he has no intention of withdrawing and said Huffington's withdrawal could help his candidacy and take votes away from other candidates.

"Every poll shows if Arianna drops out, the Green Party would go up," he said.

Green candidate, Camejo, thinks he will be picking up the crumbs left by Arianna.

After years of controlling every statewide office and the state legislature, the Democrats are finally acting scared. Just the face of McAuliffe and Davis at election night will be priceless.

and lets not forget Bill Clinton. I remember when Chris Mathews couldn't stop talking about how Bill clinton was going to get the base out and turn the recall around. Also how Davis was talking with Clinton constantly getting advice. Another blow for the so-called "political genuis-guru" Clinton. I have not heard much in the news lately about Clinton's influence on the recall election.. I wonder why?

"The California GOP is now Arnold's party. The sweet little power and financial motherlode the unappeasables enjoyed and maintained through their perennial LOSING is hitherto TERMINATED.

Californians got Gray Davis, Barbara Boxer, Dianne Feinstein, Bill Lockyear and Socialist Democrat rule because the California GOP was run by hacks who deemed any Republican capable of statewide election automatically unfit and not Conservative enough to support. "

It is spot on, and I love it! Can you tell?

Polls indicate that had Arnold not entered, McClintock would have handily won over Cruz and California would have ended up with a conservative governor.

No, the polls only show that Tom would get more votes than Cruz, neither with a majority. The fact is that the pro-recall figures only went sky high when Arnold's numbers did. That suggests that most people in the middle wouldn't vote for the recall if the only choices were Cruz and Tom. They were just holding back from deciding until they saw if Arnold looked up for the job. After the debate they decided he was. If not, they would just vote no on part one, and Davis would remain Governor.

Tom would have really dropped out of the race to give it to a more viable conservative candidate? From what Ray Haynes described, it doesn't sound like it.

"Tom was not at those meetings, and Darrell asked me what I thought Tom would do if he financed the recall. I told him I didn't know, but Darrell would have a persuading argument to ask him to step aside, since Tom could not have made it work without Darrell's help. I know Darrell talked to Tom about not running. Tom ultimately decided not to reconsider. Issa is a strong conservative, and was, more than any other, responsible for the success of the recall, but Tom's believed he should be Governor. That was one of the principal reasons (though not the only one) Darrell chose not to run. We lost a solid conservative, who could have financed his own campaign, and got a solid conservative who could not, because Tom believed he was entitled to the Governor's office."

I hope Clinton's magic is wearing off.

I always thought that he had a pact with the devil, and I'm only being half-serious :-)

"I for one am tired of losing in California and being screwed by the Democrats."

Better light the candles, pour the wine, and get the Barry White CD goin' -- that's a political transvestite wearing that dress, and "her" name is Arnold.

Yes, I saw the post, read it and thought it was terrific. He's stating his feelings about the current impasse in the California GOP.

I don't remember anything jumping out at me as "unacceptable" that would cause it to get pulled...

From the L.A. Times story. I would link but sometimes I just don't feel like making it easy to reach the Times.

"... Support for Davis has slipped among key parts of his political base -- Democrats, women, moderates and liberals among them..."

"... Summing up the view of many voters was poll respondent Gladys Taub, a Democrat exasperated by the state's giant budget shortfalls..."

"... Gov. Davis has been doing a terrible job, and I just want to get rid of him..."

"... For Davis, a key challenge in the final days of the race is to bolster support among Democrats. Despite his aggressive efforts to woo union members, Hispanics and other traditional blocs of the party, the poll found 27 percent of Democrats support the recall, up from 19 percent in the last poll..."

"... Other signs of trouble for Davis: 54 percent of women support the recall; last month, 54 percent of women opposed it. Support for the recall also grew among the elderly, who typically turn out to vote in large numbers. While voters 65 and older were split on the recall last month, they now favor it, 54 percent to 46 percent. Even Los Angeles county voters, crucial to the success of any Democrat in a statewide election, have swung in favor of the recall, 53 percent-46 percent. Last month, they opposed it by a 58 percent-38 percent margin..."

"... among likely voters overall, more than three out of five oppose the driver's license bill. Moreover, more than four out of 10 likely voters say a candidate's support for the measure would make them less likely to vote for that person..."

"... For Bustamante, the poll results are bleak. Only 41 percent have a favorable impression of him, while 58 percent view Schwarzenegger favorably, and 62 percent view McClintock in a positive light..."
