An Open Letter to Tom McClintock Supporters

It seems like an eternity that we've been under the yoke of the Davis administration. Maybe you feel the same way too. When the recall petition began circulating, we responded. All told, 1.6 million of us said we were fed up with the entrenched politicians.

Together, we showed how populism can work when we join forces. So here we are- a week till Election Day. And you, the supporters of Tom McClintock, hold in the balance the fate of California.

Your choice determines whether we throw off the chains of the Davis-Bustamante regime or condemn ourselves to three more years of it. It's a substantial charge and I know that you won't take it lightly....

Huffington considering leaving governor's race! (why, Arianna, why?)

Huffington considering leaving governor's race She may oppose the recall and throw her support to Bustamante

Independent commentator Arianna Huffington said Monday she is strongly considering leaving the recall race, signaling a growing fear among the political left that Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger stands a good chance of becoming California's next governor.

Huffington, appearing at a campaign event in San Francisco, said she would decide as soon as today whether to urge her supporters to oppose the recall and possibly back Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante -- reflecting the view that in a close race, votes by progressives for Huffington and Green Party candidate Peter Camejo could help elect Schwarzenegger....

Republican says he'll stay course in bid to unseat Davis

By T.J. Sullivan,
September 30, 2003

Republican state Sen. Tom McClintock is a pilot without a parachute, a race car driver without a seat belt, a ship's captain without a life raft, or even a life preserver.

If his campaign to replace Gov. Gray Davis in California's recall election goes down, crashes or sinks, McClintock's determined to go with it, regardless what some think the consequences may be.

"I steer a straight course, and I stay the course no matter what the pressure," McClintock said this past week.

He is not buying into defeatist comments and criticisms, regardless of what poll numbers might show....

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Gov. Gray Davis and Arnold Schwarzenegger received hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign donations in the last few days. And with it, they're bombarding the airwaves with ads and exchanging attacks on each other.

NBC11's Susan Siravo reported that a Davis spokesman said they got their hands on an e-mail showing that Schwarzenegger's campaign planned to fill Davis' town hall meeting Monday with people who would disrupt and attack the governor....

California Recall: Democrats circle over top hopeful

By Andrew LaMar and Sandy Kleffman CONTRA COSTA TIMES

With one week to go until California's historic recall election, Democrats trained their focus on Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger, who emerged over the weekend as the undisputed front-runner.

Democrats plan to attack Schwarzenegger with a flurry of mailers, phone calls and TV ads calling into question everything from his voting record to his association with former Gov. Pete Wilson. The move comes after several weekend tracking polls showed the actor-turned-politician taking a commanding lead over his chief rival, Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, the only major Democrat running as a replacement candidate....

SACRAMENTO (Talon News) -- State Sen. Ray Haynes, who has been described by the California media as "one of the most outspoken conservatives in the Legislature," announced his support on Monday for the candidacy of Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger over his political ally and friend, State Sen. Tom McClintock, in the California recall election taking place next Tuesday.

"I have endorsed Arnold Schwarzenegger for Governor," Haynes wrote in an e-mail broadcast to his constituents and fellow conservatives. "I have received a variety of responses to that decision. ... I understand them all." ....

Spinning the Recall Polls: CBS Only Skeptical Towards Polls with Bad News for Davis

"When a politician is behind he doesn't believe in the polls," CBS correspondent Jerry Bowen began his Monday report on the California recall, though Bowen could have just as easily been referring to his own network's habit of casting doubt on surveys unfavorable to Democrats while trumpeting favorable ones.

In their coverage of the recall, Dan Rather and CBS have maintained this tradition. Over the weekend, the Gallup Organization released a survey showing very strong support for removing Davis and and Schwarzenegger running well ahead of other candidates. There has been some criticism of the poll as being inaccurate. Appropriately, Rather decided to report on it: ....

California: Candidates still ducking truth on state budget mess

Sacramento Bee ^ | September 30, 2003 | Dan Weintraub
Posted on 09/30/2003 7:31 AM PDT by John Jorsett

If there was one issue that drove voters to petition for the recall of Gov. Gray Davis, it was the budget. The governor's near-silence on the state's deteriorating fiscal health during last year's campaign, followed by his disclosure after the election of a $38 billion shortfall, shocked and angered Californians.

Many simply concluded that Davis was not competent to remain in office. But today, just a week before the Oct. 7 recall election, none of the major candidates running to replace Davis has proposed a realistic, detailed plan to erase what remains of the budget shortfall. And neither has the governor....

McClintock Advisor Looks to Bible as Basis for Law

John Stoos' writings outline his vision of an anti-abortion city council and other such action by government. The candidate says he was 'not aware' of his aide's writings.

John Stoos, a key advisor in the gubernatorial campaign of Republican state Sen. Tom McClintock, has a dream:

"I dream of the day when a strong Christian majority is elected to a city council somewhere in America. This council could then pass a resolution declaring that abortion is now illegal in their city," Stoos wrote this year in a conservative religious journal....

Tom McClintock will most likely be Ostracized – and he probably will Deserve It

Yesterday, I heard a radio ad on a local Bay Area AM station, run by some American Indian tribe. That is how they identified themselves – as an Indian Nation, and they were running a political ad for Tom McClintock, the theme that, as conservatives, if we voted our conscious, then Tom McClintock can win.

Don’t listen to the nay-sayers, say the Indian gaming interests, not only can Tom McClintock win, he WILL win if we all vote principle. And, ka-Ching, it sort of sounds like some of those other American Indian radio ads for their Indian Casino(s) - we are ALL WINNERS at their casino.

Yes sir, we are all going to WIN! I guess Tom took some money from the Indian gambling interests....

Floundering Calif. gov reels

New York Daily News ^ | 9/30/03 | News Wire Services
Posted on 09/30/2003 2:16 AM PDT by kattracks

California Gov. Gray Davis, reeling from a new poll showing he's down and out, accused Arnold Schwarzenegger's handlers of engaging in "dirty tricks" yesterday by plotting to disrupt one of his campaign events.

Davis campaign spokesman Peter Ragone said he has an E-mail showing that Ah-nold's camp was trying to stack one of the governor's town hall meetings "with shills for their campaign ... who would disrupt and attack the governor."
Schwarzenegger spokesman Sean Walsh said there was no plot to disrupt the town hall meeting that was to be broadcast last night on a Spanish-language television network.

"Our response is it sounds like the wheels are flying off the car of the Davis campaign," Walsh said....
