for what principals are you voting for? I'd vote for my old high school principal Mr. Malthrope for the "Biggest Criminal in State Service" award. They hauled him away in my junior year for stealing coffee from the teacher's lounge. LOTS of coffee. 3 cans a day worth of coffee. He was reselling the stuff at area flea markets.
For the "Worst Combover" award, I'd vote for the principal at my junior high, Mr. Evans. His pate looked like a high wind in a wheatfield.

You offer this as a reason to vote against him?Ronald Reagan was an actor before he ran for Governor. Did you hold that against the Gipper?

He never said anything like this. Show me the quote and link to it. Or admit that you are misrepresenting Arnold -- again.

I am not voting because I live in another state.
I have just been wondering how many were supporting Arnold because they think he is the only one who could win?
I am curious about what would have happened without Arnold entering in the race?
I wish people had enough confidence in the right principles. I agree with Rush, that we CAN win with our principles.

I am curious about what would have happened without Arnold entering in the race?Bustamante's people would have spent all their time, money, and, effort, painting Tom McClintock as a right wing nut case. And you know what it would have worked; not because he is one but because it is so easy to do. Arnold is not a perfect conservative, but he is not a liberal, especially when compared to Bustamante.
I wish people had enough confidence in the right principles. I agree with Rush, that we CAN win with our principles.
With all due respect to you and Rush, I do not see any evidence for this in this case. McClintock running against Bustamante would have been a very different campaign. Many moderates and independents who will vote for Arnold would not vote for McClintock. Principles are, of course, important, but if you are not in power you have no ability to implement them. In politics even more than in sports winning is not the most import thing; it is the only thing.
Unless you see no difference between Arnold and Bustamante I would argue that the truly principled action would be to support someone who can win and will do some good, as opposed to supporting someone who will not win, and would have done more good.

Thanks for the topic/posts.
I'm coming in late but wanted to say a couple of things. I'm native born and a "right winger". I love McClintock and feel he best represents the idea of conservatism. Arnold stated he will continue to support illegal alien children when he debated the other four candidates. (Supporting the children means supporting their parents too.) Other than that I didn't find anything that he did say as meaningful nor informative. In fact, I came away feeling he was pretty much an idiot. HE'S AN ACTOR FOLKS!! Which leaves me a bit surprised at all the cheering for him as a great leader. He doesn't have a clear idea of how our State Government even works. McClintock certainly does. Tom was thoughtful, kind and respectful of the others and Bust-a-MECHA and Arianna even agreed with several of Tom's statements.
I've been listening to all the talk shows and it's been clear from the start that Arnold was the pick of the litter, but I find him to be completely inexperienced. I'm fearful that he may be a Democrat in disguise and will end up taxing us even after all his promises. I hate DAVID AND BUST-A-MOVE for destroying my native state. I don't consider Ahhhhnold a good choice.....BUT.....
We have no other choice at this time. I LOVE McClintock, however, to take back our state we have to put someone in that is a moderate before we can put someone in that is a true conservative. WE HAVE TO STOP THE ILLEGAL ALIEN EXODUS INTO THIS STATE! IT'S ONE OF OUR MOST GLARINGLY SERIOUS ISSUES. I WILL EXPECT ARNOLD TO DEAL WITH THIS SPEEDILY. HE CANNOT REPEAL DAVIS' SIGNING OF THE D.LICENSE BILL. I BELIEVE IT HAS TO GO THROUGH THE REFERENDUM PROCESS.
I hope to G_D that Arnold follows through on all these promises or I will vote my heart next time. I even seriously entertained the idea of voting for McClintock and have actually vacillated back and forth for weeks, with the idea that California may have to completely hit bottom before a true conservative will bring it back. But....I have thought long and hard and decided that my vote, just like my vote for Bush (who I find will never close the borders), will have to be a self-sacrificing vote for A.S. I don't find him to be experienced, trustworthy, or capable of fighting off the wolves in Legislature without an advisor/handler by his side, and his presence doesn't strike me as "huge." I'm sorry for Tom with conservative folks calling him a spoiler as he's doing just what our process asks for. Giving us a choice....good, bad or indifferent.
Our political process sucks. We vote for the one most likely to beat the liberal/s. Not the best man for the job.
Arnold is who the Republican Party has picked for us to vote for, I'm afraid. And I'm definitely voting YES on 54!!
To: new cruelty
It was for "effect", although Arnaaald does have a tendency to turn every issue into something for the children. That's a common leftist tactic, which is precisely what this new-age Ross Perot really is.
To: Oliver Boliver Butt
Is anyone sending illegals packing? Do you really believe Tom would be successful at sending them back? No one in politics is successful by themselves. But it always takes one man to propose the bill and rally support. Don't you know how politics works?

Sorry... with Arnold you get a slow move to the right... with Bustastate you get a fast move to socialist hell. Arnold is a move to the right, by California standards, but that isn't saying much. It's still a move to the left, by common-sensical standards. What part of socialized health care and taking care of everybody isn't "to the left"?

you wrote: "HE'S AN ACTOR FOLKS!! Which leaves me a bit surprised at all the cheering for him as a great leader"
Actually, that's a somewhat unfair characterization. Arnold came to American with $20 and 20 words of English. He earned his first million BEFORE he ever acted in a movie.
He built a rather substantial financial empire, and he also earned a masters degree in business.
Second point. Arnold has the ability to get people's attention. He is, in fact, something of a populist. He therefore will be able to talk to the citizens of the Great Bear State over the heads of the legislature and the newspapers.
Thus, he has the makings of a governor in the MANNER of Ronald Reagan. That's what RR could do--take his message directly to the people. Arnold also can do that.

I have been a team player in the GOP for many years, but feel we are compromising ourselves out of our most important principles. I consider myself a "team player" for the GOP.
If I lived in California and didn't vote for McClintock, would you say I don't have any principles?
