[history]
The Army is scrambling to fix a flaw in its newest armored vehicle -- the already troubled Stryker -- before sending it to Iraq next month for its first test in real combat conditions.
The Stryker is a 19-ton armored car that was supposed to combine the speed and quick deployability of light forces with considerable firepower and armor protection.

I like this one:
26. GUNNER, SABOT, SNIPER (firing an anti-tank shell at a sniper) is not an appropriate use of ammunition.

Y'all like my new tag line? Even nastier: *Damn, that Stryker looks like a BTR-60*

I'm still wondering why my unit, an Army National Guard unit, was asked the question at all.
And what the connection between my unit and that questionairre is.
In light of it initially being asked to Marines and Navy, it makes absolutely no sense to me.
Maybe I'm not looking at it in the right way or from the right angle A comparison between *more dedicated* Marines with NG and naval personnel, perhaps? My own CAPSTONE job is the OSUT training of recruits and, God help us, draftees if it ever gets back to that, and the reestablishment of centers to do so. But they may have also been looking for results seperated by age/experience factors as well, and figured they'd find some prior service folks who'd been in various line outfits now in the NG. -archy-/-

That would make sense.
Some.
It's tickling my antenna oddly still.
I hope that whatever funny business was planned for the info is over with or derailed.
My 13B basic and AIT was OSUT, and what was drilled into us was legality of orders and our duty to uphold the Constitution.
Most of my Drill Sars had served in Desert Storm, I'm not sure if it has anything to do with my current attitudes about this kind of thing. It may.
I find it sadly funny how I am in the minority of the 'young guys' in uniform who would not fire on fellow citizens.
I guess it's due to my sense that my duty was to the Constitution.
Very few of my training group felt the same way.

About a month ago somebody who posted like English was not his first language recommended the BTR-90 instead of the Stryker. He might have had a point.
Can any Stryker defenders tell me what a Stryker can do that a BTR-90 can't?

About a month ago somebody who posted like English was not his first language recommended the BTR-90 instead of the Stryker. He might have had a point. Yep. Though the standard BMP turret with the 100mm gun [soon to be upgraded to a 120, I understand] may end up an even more common version than the rocket/ 30mm gun equipped *Kliver turret* version in the pic in your post. Pretty rough news for a Stryker that goes up against one with a Browning .50. Oh, I forgot, it won't be a *fighting vehicle,* it'll drop off its Infantrymen to take on the BTRs and BMPs without fire support.

Sink in lakes or rivers in up to class 3 conditions. BTR's swim. I've been told they're not too bad in snow, either.

That was a guy called 44th in Post 223 of Study finds new Army vehicle too vulnerable. Yep, the guy who suggested: Guys! Rather then wasting time and money - buy THIS http://armor.kiev.ua/Tanks/Modern/btr90/
For which we'd get a proven vehicle that swims, has working 23 or 30mm gun systems with a 100mm gun available, and crew exit doors to the side like the MPs ASV and a large enough top crew hatch to allow venting the overpressure generated by shaped charge HEAT warheads like those of the various RPG launchers. I'm not at all certain how effective its armor protection is, but it's of steel that can handle reactive *Blazer* armor or maybe even an *Arena*bactive defense system.
Not certain whether one would go in a C130 or not, but we're not certain whether Stryker will or not, either. And we know the BTR can swim, a handy feature if such vehicles are indeed to be delivered by Army or Navy transport vessels.
As an *interim vehicle*- if they're still trying to sell that happy thought too- it's not the worst idea I've heard, and we could do a lot worse. Very cost-effective, at least.
Soldier 44th, have you experience with the BTRs? 44th motor-rifles, perhaps, or rebuilt 44th division? You with VDV, by chance; I'd be very interested in knowing about air-dropping of BTR, though BMD is of course the preferred vehicle for such desantniki operations.
