In California, the Propositions Keep Rolling Along
SACRAMENTO, Calif. It was the last question of a long and raucous debate here, almost an afterthought, and for many television viewers it probably sounded like a lot of bureaucratic mumbo jumbo after the evening's theatrics.
But perhaps more than any of the other questions posed to Arnold Schwarzenegger and the candidates seeking Gov. Gray Davis's job, the one asking whether they supported Proposition 53 struck at the heart of the chronic budget and taxation problems in California that have fueled the recall campaign and will undoubtedly haunt any new governor....

Casino issue receiving national attention
Hesperia Star ^ | Tue Sep, 23 2003 | PETER DAY/Assistant Editor
Posted on 09/28/2003 9:30 AM PDT by BenLurkin
Mayor Dennis Nowicki is accustomed to interviews with local journalists about the casino issue. Now newspapers from much farther away are interested in Hesperias story.
Last week, Rick Green, a staff writer with the Hartford Courant in Hartford, Conn., traveled 3,000 miles to talk to Nowicki and others about Hesperias agreement with the Timbisha-Shoshone tribe. Hesperias proposal is particularly interesting to Green, who writes exclusively on tribal and gaming issues, because it involves a proposed off-reservation casino.
I am particularly interested in communities that are dealing with the question of off-reservation casinos, Green said. Off-reservation casinos are potentially a big deal in Connecticut. I was attracted to Hesperia because the proposal is for an off-reservation casino. ....

COMIC MILLER MIGHT RANT FOR OFFICE
September 28, 2003 -- Arnold Schwarzenegger may be the latest celebrity to transform himself into a candidate for high California office, but if some Republican political operatives have their way, he will not be the last. The comedian Dennis Miller is being talked about - apparently seriously - as a Republican candidate for a statewide post. Three Republican strategists interviewed in the last week have said they want to draft Miller into politics. One, a prominent Republican operative and Schwarzenegger aide who spoke on the condition of anonymity said that once the recall election is over, he plans to recruit Miller to challenge Barbara Boxer for her Senate seat next year. The comedian, famous for his raunchy and irreverent rants and his stint on "Saturday Night Live" more than a decade ago, provided the Schwarzenegger campaign's official post-debate spin in Sacramento on Wednesday night.Los Angeles Times

California: Few catch glimpse of Bustamante. Candidate besieged by crowd numbered in single digits
Monterey Herald ^ | September 28, 2003 | Victoria Manley

Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante didn't have time for small talk when he dropped into Salinas on his campaign trail Saturday. Not that there were many who seemed to care.
Bustamante, who has mostly run on a "no on recall, yes on Bustamante" campaign for California governor, visited with a small group at a private fund-raiser in a home south of Salinas.
Apparently, anyone not willing to pay to speak with Bustamante was out of luck. The politician arrived in a private jet at Salinas Municipal Airport at 4 p.m., and within minutes of landing was whisked into a black sedan....

California: Davis wants 'Live' debate

LOS ANGELES -- It was less than two weeks ago that Arnold Schwarzenegger took his message directly to voters on Larry King's popular talk show, but the actor refused King's invitation Saturday to come on again and debate Gov. Gray Davis one on one. Aides to the Republican movie star characterized Davis' demand for a debate as an act of desperation "by a politician who is facing political extinction," but Davis, after a ceremony in which he signed six bills designed to protect the elderly, said he can't understand why Schwarzenegger won't slug it out with him....

Isolated at Home, McClintock Finds New Friends

Little known outside the state until now, McClintock has struck a chord with the right wing of the Republican Party nationwide with his frank presentation of his point of view anti-tax, anti-big government, anti-abortion, anti-gun control, anti-illegal immigration, anti-gay marriage.
"Tom is one of us," said Richard A. Viguerie, who has founded dozens of conservative organizations over the last 40 years and pioneered direct-mail fund-raising for the Republican Party in the 1970s and '80s. "And it's so exciting to have someone who wants to be associated with us, who will walk with us, win or lose. I see Tom as being a major national conservative leader in the future." ....

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Voters in the California recall election might be poised to kick Gov. Gray Davis out and vote Republican Arnold Schwarznegger in, according to a CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll released Sunday.

California: No single policy for racial data. Prop 54 foes say information is still necessary
Sacramento Bee ^ | September 28, 2003 | Jim Sanders

Halle Berry, the daughter of a Caucasian mother and an African American father, would be counted as mixed race by the U.S. census. But the Oscar-winning actress would be counted as African American at the University of California.
And if she applied to California State University, Berry would have to choose between the two races or be listed as "declined to state."
Proposition 54 on the Oct. 7 ballot is fueled, in part, by a policy mishmash in which agencies can't seem to agree on what needs to be tracked -- or how....

Calif. recall holds dilemma for liberals
AP | 9/28/03
Posted on 09/28/2003 11:22 AM PDT by kattracks
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) California's recall election offers voters on the left some tantalizing choices, including a media-savvy independent who favors public financing of campaigns and a Green anti-war activist with socialist roots.
At first, it seemed that with so many candidates splitting the vote, the race might provide an opportunity for someone outside the political mainstream to get elected.
As the campaign nears its conclusion, however, liberals are facing a more conventional dilemma....

Running Down California- Davis can't blame Arnold for the state's problems
Los Angeles Daily News ^ | September 28, 2003 | Editorial
Posted on 09/28/2003 1:53 PM PDT by Mark
In an unconventional campaign filled with many an over-the-top statement and the occasional whopper, Gov. Gray Davis has delivered the biggest doozy yet.
Complaining about possible-successor Arnold Schwarzenegger's assessment of California government, Davis quipped, "I'm tired of him running down the state of California."
That's right, Davis accused someone else of running down California. How's that for irony? ....
