If all of you who say "McClintock is the best Candidate, but can't win", would have VOTED for HIM , he would come out on top!!!

Nope. McClintock cannot win without a substantial portion of moderate voters who, in the most recent election, went overwhelmingly Democrat but in this election apparently support Arnold.

Are you saying that if a candidate does not "cater" to you -- then the very act of not catering to you makes them "100%" responsible for the outcome of the election?

It has NOTHING to do with "catering"......it has to do with a deep seated CONVICTION,something that the Republican party is fast moving away from. All of you who are now going to bed with Arnold, are the same ones who have squabbled and SCREAMED that our gutless members of congress have handed , yeah caved in to the demos in Washington!! Can you not see that you are asking the conservative Republicans here in the state of Calif to do the exact thing you have screamed about??? THINK ABOUT IT. THe time has come when we must take a stand. BUSTAMONTE or NOT!!!!!!!!

"He already said he may raise taxes in an "emergency" and I am sure the huge red ink in the budget will end up being such an emergency to justify the largest tax increase in the history of the state."
Arnold specifically stated that he was talking about devestating natural(i.e. earthquakes) or national (i.e. terrorist attacks) emergencies. Seems a VERY reasonable response..and shows great courage to be that honest. Would have garned more votes, no doubt, if he issued a blanket promise...but that would not/could not be realistic in its' application, would it? Based on the defining parameters he listed?

Thank you Godebert!!! Well written and well said. Arnold is a Demo with a R in front of his name.!!! Given a little time all those who voted for him, will be screaming.Busto and Arnold are one and the same so I will take my chances and vote my conscience. Those who won't and cave will have the blood of this election on THEIR HANDS. They are the cowards.

Even if he should win, he won't pass or sign a single piece of legislation during his entire term.

You say that like it's a bad thing...

Whether McClintock pulls out or not is irrelevant to his political future. He's already toast with the Cali Republican party. He's already regarded as a bitter-ender, a stubborn non-team player, an obstacle and a tremendous, expensive distraction to the front-running party candidate.

He already has blown support in any hypothetical future race against Boxer or any elected dog-catcher.

McClintock knows this very well, so he has to stay in the race on the odd chance he could win. It's his only opportunity to stay in politics. He won't win, so he's toast any way you look at it. Party politics on this high level is unforgiving.

Let's look at the hard political reality. The Republicans MUST take the rich California prize. A victory for the Pubs will impact the political psychology of the entire nation. It will aid President Bush's re-election enormously.

Consider the ramifications of a Democrat victory. A victory for them will revitalize the national Democrat party, its contributors, the Clintonistas, the liberal media, Boxer, Feinstein and Gray Davis. Alec Baldwin and the Hollyweird crowd, etal, will be jublilant.

There will be no giant sucking sound coming out of the Golden State if Bustamente wins, only the gasping sound from the deflation and collapse of whatever demoralized Republican party remains there.

California remaining in Democrat hands politically impacts the entire country and, most importantly, the next presidential election. So non-Californians DO have a dog in this fight, which is why this arch-conservative but realistic Floridian Republican is putting her two cents into this debate.

While Arnie can't win merely by appealing to conservatives, he also can't win unless he does appeal to conservatives. The fault lies with Arnie.

Exactly right!

And to the Arnie-bots, a question on the "split vote":

How many people have said, "Arnie's the better guy, but I'm voting for Tom"? I doubt Tom has ANY Arnold votes in his tally.

Now, how many people are saying, "I like Tom, but I'll vote for Arnie"?

Who split the vote again?

Arnie entered the race AFTER TOM, split the Republican vote, and has shown he is incapable of drawing the votes he needs.

Now the best his people can do is demonize Tom and Tom's voters, threaten them with the Bustaboogeyman, and scream it's all Tom's fault, not Arnie's.

Arnie split the vote, and now cannot pull it off. The blame lies with Arnold and the CA GOP, not the voters.

Unfortunately he won't repeal or overturn a single piece of legislation either, and that is a bad thing.

Yep.

Have you noticed that the man who hates taxes (Arnie) is already calling for a tax increase on the Indians? Shades of things to come.

President Bush was always considered the front runner. McCain was second. I agree that there were people who thought that President Bush could not win in the general election and that McCain could. But the numbers were always good for GW. McClintock does not have good numbers. McClintock is in the teens and Bustamante is in the high twenties or low thirties. The facts don't agree with your comparison.

>

Let's not forget that though we disapproved of McCain and his choice to run further to the Left than Bush (but still to the Right of Gore), that he took his defeat properly and remained a very good party man. He campaigned vigorously for Bush. He didn't get petulant and stay in the race right up to the convention. He did the right thing for the party and the nation and bowed out.

Contrast that with McClintock.

>>>I just can't get my mind to wrap around this.

Obviously. Keep trying and remember, this isn't about me. Stay on topic. If you read the GOP party platform and check out the rating system employed by the ACU, you'll get a broader and deeper understanding of exactly why, many conservative Republicans oppose Arnie and his liberal agenda. You also might better comprehend why Tom McClintock is the right choice for conservative Republicans.

STOP IT! You know better than this. Stop evaluating California as if it was Texas.

It. Is. Not.

California is a liberal state. The middle in California is to the left of the middle in Texas and There Is Nothing You Can Do About That Today.

You must accept incremental victory. You have no choice in the matter. No one, repeat, no one likes to have no choice. But this is not about what you like or dislike. It is about winning and what is best for the country.

You know the answer to all this. You know how devastaing a GOP governor will be to next year's Dem presidential nominee. You simply must not be selfish in this matter. You cannot have what you want. You must accept the best you can get.

Your Prediction: McClintock can take his double-digits into election day, and half of them will will enter the voting booth and be smart enough to switch to the frontrunner. Arnold will win even with McClintock in the race.

My prediction:
Recall Davis 58-60% yes; 40-42% no
Arnold wins with 42%

right now,
Arnold is on the upswing (28% to 35% in 2 weeks)
Busty is losing ground - (down 2% in those 2 weeks)

come election day, Arnold will be over 40%

Tommy McC will be neither a spoiler nor a winner, just irrelevant.

>>>This recall election IS a defining moment for the Republican Party.

Absolutely correct.

As I've been saying for weeks now, Arnie's campaign does nothing to advance the conservative agenda and the GOP platform. Arnie is only damaging the future of the California GOP and most Golden State Republicans couldn't care less. And theres a good chance this anti-conservative mentality will spread nationally.

Ronald Reagan worked very hard to advance the idea that conservatism can triumph over liberalism. That idea is being challenged by left of center, leftcoast centrists(aka.RINO`s), who would rather see a liberal Republican become the next governor of California, then a solid conservative and loyal Republican named Tom McClintock.

Pathetic and very sad.

WOW!! better than I thought on the recall, and indicates that Arnold may well end up with more than the 42% I predicted. Thank you for the post

It will be interesing if the California Republican party DOES endorse Arnold....and urges McC to pull out (either directly or covertly with the AS endorsement).....as I would think that any future $$$$ that would go to support McC's future campaign coffers (for ANY office) might be severely limited or even non existant, should he refuse to comply.

Why would the 'party' offer financial assistance to someone who appears to be putting SELF over PARTY?

Just thinking out loud.
