HOWARD DEAN'S UGLY SLUR

There was a particularly ugly moment during Thursday's free-for-all between the 10 Democratic presidential candidates at Pace University.

It came when an obviously stung Howard Dean lashed out at rival Dick Gephardt for comparing him to former GOP House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

"We need to remember that the enemy here is George Bush, not each other," said Dean.

Say what?

George Bush is the enemy?

Did Dean misspeak?

Or did he say what he meant?

Casual slur?

Or Freudian slip?

Either way, it was rendered even more offensive by the fact that it took place at Pace University - once-upon-a-time virtually in the shadows of the Twin Towers.

Even more sad is the fact that not one of his opponents - especially pols like Joe Lieberman and Bob Graham, who allegedly know better - criticized Dean on his use of the word.

Which we have to assume means that they agreed with it.

So let's be clear here.

George W. Bush is the president of the United States.

Osama bin Laden is the "enemy."

So was Saddam Hussein, until Operation Iraqi Freedom ended his murderous regime - no thanks to Howard Dean.

Dean and the other Democratic candidates owe an apology to President Bush.

And to the American people.

Not that we expect any such thing, of course.

Dizzy Dean & Co. may be schmucks, but I wouldn't overreact to this. He was referring to a political race, not whether or not Bush was a bigger enemy to this country than Bin Laden or Hussein. Now, they may actually believe that...........but chalk it up to a sloppy choice of words (typical for Dean) rather than treason.

All you have to do is compare Ted Kennedy's outburst of a few days ago (about the war in Iraq) with the words and deeds of his older brother, Jack. Even allowing for alcohol-related brain damage, it's quite a contrast, just over a 40-year period.

It's funny you should say that. Try reading Charlie's War, a book about Dem Rep from Texas, Charlie Wilson, and his very large hand in winning the war in Afghanistan against the Soviets.

He didn't do it himself but without his work it would have never had happened.
