Schwarzenegger, Shriver - Story's New Wrinkle
Daily News (New York) | 5-21-03 | BY GEORGE RUSH AND JOANNA MOLLOY With Suzanne Rozdeba and Ben Widdicombe

From Gossip section, Pg. 20 of the NY Daily News, May 21, 2003. Long before the recall.
Story's new wrinkle
Arnold Schwarzenegger knows how to keep the magic alive. Word is the Terminator dropped a small bundle on a private jet so he and his beloved, Maria Shriver, could fly from the Cannes Film Festival to Venice - for a gondola ride....

Getting the Bustamante Butterflies
Democrats fear the lieutenant governor's campaign has stalled, with no spark in sight.
After a lackluster performance in this week's debate and a rash of stories that highlighted criticism of his fund-raising, Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante faces a growing perception that his campaign has stalled, according to fellow Democrats and independent analysts....

Schwarzenegger and the governor cast the election as an either-or choice -- a strategy that helps both camps.
Gov. Gray Davis and Arnold Schwarzenegger turned their focus on one another Friday in mutual efforts to frame the closing phase of the recall race as a showdown between the two of them.
The Democratic incumbent, renowned for brutal campaign ads against rivals, started running his first spot against the Republican actor, who has been attacking Davis in a commercial that began airing Monday....

If Bustamante wins recall, Richie Ross will be close at hand.
If California voters pick Cruz Bustamante as the replacement candidate in next month's recall election, they'll also be get Richie Ross. His name isn't well-known outside Sacramento, but he's one of the most powerful political advisers in the Capitol. Bustamante confirmed in an interview that Ross will either serve in his administration or continue working closely as a policy adviser if the recall passes and he wins. "He gives great political advice,'' Bustamante said. "He will play a major role." ....

Recall Finds Loopholes In Campaign Finance Law - Money Flowing for Davis, Candidates

Over the past summer, allies of California Gov. Gray Davis (D) paid $2.1 million at premium rates to seven companies that specialize in gathering signatures for petitions -- a major industry in the state where referendums rule. The huge expenditure had no substantive purpose -- the petitions were not being used to put anything on the ballot -- other than to prevent anti-Davis forces from hiring the firms....

California: Judge to Bustamante: Prove you spent funds
Sacramento Bee ^ | September 27, 2003 | Alexa H. Bluth
Posted on 09/27/2003 6:28 AM PDT by John Jorsett
A Sacramento judge ordered Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante on Friday to prove that he tried in earnest to cancel television ad contracts and return money for the recall campaign that he collected in violation of the state's campaign finance laws. If state Sen. Ross Johnson, who filed the original lawsuit against Bustamante, is not satisfied that he made a good-faith effort to comply with the order, the judge wrote, Johnson may seek contempt charges.
The judge's move signifies another twist in an ongoing legal battle over allegations that the Democratic lieutenant governor sought to skirt new campaign finance limits by collecting millions of dollars into an old account....

Valley donors back actor and hometown candidate

By Russell Clemings The Fresno Bee (Published Saturday, September 27, 2003, 5:31 AM)
The movie star and the hometown product are attracting far more central San Joaquin Valley money than their main competitor in the list of possible replacements for Gov. Davis in the Oct. 7 recall election. Reports filed with California election officials show that, as of Sept. 20, the main campaign account of Republican actor Arnold Schwarzenegger had collected about $278,000 from central San Joaquin Valley donors....

Huffington rates debate in visit to Fresno State

Female voters rallied behind her verbal exchanges, she says. By Kerri Ginis The Fresno Bee (Published Saturday, September 27, 2003, 5:38 AM)
Former columnist and independent gubernatorial candidate Arianna Huffington said she refused to back down during her rancorous exchange with Arnold Schwarzenegger at Wednesday night's debate because she wanted to reveal his true persona when it comes to women. "I think what happened in the debate is very revealing," said Huffington, who made her first swing through the Valley on Friday, stopping at California State University, Fresno, to speak with several hundred students, employees and community members.
"He is already suffering from a gender gap, and I knew that in the debate there was an opportunity to expose his persona," she said. "At these debates, who you really are can come through, and I think it did with him." ....

CA 54: CA is a racist state
San Diego Union-Tribune ^ | 09-26-03 | Joseph Perkins

That's not my opinion. That's the implicit view of those who oppose a ballot measure that aims to end the odious practice in the Golden State of classifying people by their "race." Proposition 54 would forbid state and local government agencies in California from identifying individuals by their skin color for purposes of public education, public contracting, public employment and other government operations.
Foes of the measure, from Jesse Jackson to Cruz Bustamante, fret that California's nonwhite population somehow will be irreparably harmed if it is approved by the voters.
They insinuate that California's white population cannot be trusted to treat nonwhites with fairness, without prejudice....

Gray Davis as governor: every bit as bad as you've heard.
IN THE CAMPAIGN TO SAVE California governor Gray Davis's job, no one bothers to defend the Davis record, not even Davis. Instead, in the September 24 gubernatorial debate, the lone Democrat Cruz Bustamante conspicuously distanced himself from Davis's policies, treating the governor like a political leper. California Democrats, by their silence, appear to concede that the prosecution has an ironclad case against him....

California: Advisers call Davis Demos' only chance
San Jose Mercury News ^ | September 27, 2003 | Mark Gladstone and Laura Kurtzman
Posted on 09/27/2003 8:43 AM PDT by John Jorsett
Hoping to win back wayward Democrats in the last days of the recall election, Gov. Gray Davis has begun to portray the race as a partisan, two-man contest between himself and Republican actor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
As part of that strategy, the governor's campaign is now publicly discounting Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, a fellow Democrat on the replacement ballot, as a viable candidate.
``It's a very complicated two-person race but it still comes down to whether Gray Davis stays or Arnold Schwarzenegger replaces him,'' said Davis adviser Susan Kennedy.
Polls show that around 20 percent of Democrats plan to vote for the recall. To bring them back to the fold, the new message of the Davis campaign is that a vote for the recall amounts to a vote for Schwarzenegger, because Bustamante has no chance....

Governor Challenges Actor --- Davis Blasts 'errors.' Demands Debate --- Schwarzenegger Camp Says No
sfgate.com ^ | Friday,, September 26, 2003 | Zachary Coile
Posted on 09/27/2003 1:13 AM PDT by onyx
Gov. Gray Davis challenged Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger Thursday to a one-on-one debate unless the actor corrects several "flat-out errors" he made about the governor's record during Wednesday's televised candidate forum.
The challenge was immediately rejected by the Schwarzenegger campaign, which dismissed it as a last-minute stunt by a politician who, polls show, is still in danger of losing his job in the Oct. 7 recall election....

For McClintock, It's Win/Win or Lose/Lose
Njord
Posted on 09/27/2003 1:49 AM PDT by Njord
Senator McClintock is the man I'd like to see in the governor's chair. Unfortunately, he hasn't got a chance of winning, not this time, anyway. The only thing he can accomplish is to lose the election for the Republicans. If he does so, he will be the most reviled Republican in the state of California.
It's a shame he has boxed himself in with his promise to stay in the race. It convinces me that, though he understands government, he does not understand politics. But if you don't win the polcitical race, you don't get a chance to do any governing. If he loses this one for the Republicans, they may still love him in his home district, but as far as aspiring to higher office goes, his political career may very well be over....
