The M14 E2 was even better. It came equipted with a pistol grip and bipod. It more than doubled the effective firing range from 300 to 720 meters as I recall, without a scope.

I loved my M14 more than any weapon I carried there. If an improvement could be made, downsize it to handle a 7mm round and lighten it up a bit.

I can't pass this subject without seeing that the M-1 Garande gets at least honorable mention-I have two. However, the only reason I don't have an M-1A is the cost.
The 30 caliber bullet was ideal, whether it came out of a Krag, 1903A3, M1917, M-14, M-60, BAR or whatever. Even with its respectable muzzle velocity, the .223 can't compete with the effectiveness of the 30 cal.

I must not be living right, because when I say the same thing, people laugh at me. I always hear how no Mini will hit a pie tin at 50 yards, or that they are the "Amish Gun," or whatever other great putdown is current. The ones I have owned were every bit as good (or bad, I guess) as any M-1 Carbine I ever fooled with, which is all I ask of them. I have owned Minis and ARs, and if I had to head to the hills without much in the way of cleaning supplies, etc., I'd prefer a stainless Mini-14 from about every aspect except accuracy.

The aftermarket 20 and 30 round magazines for them do generally suck, though.

I was shooting my M-14 clone, the M1A (with national match barrel) the other day and the sucker jammed with new ammo on the first shot... bad ammo. The rim broke off the cartridge which had expanded tightly in the chamber and was unextractable. The clear the rifle, I needed to ram rod the cartridge out. Bummer.

The firearm is still one of the greatest to have been made. I have shot the M-16, which I think is a fine weapon, the FN-FAL which is far better, and the M-1A which is right up there with the FAL. With a cartridge jam, the FAL is superior to the M1A in the ease of extracting the jam as it opens so easily.

Now that SB489 has become law in the People's Republik of Kalifornia, effectively banning the sale of all semi-auto handguns starting in 2005 by mandating this ridiculous loaded chamber indicator and mag. drop safety, I think it's time to stock up on handguns again while I still can.

Having been bitten my the 1911 bug, I've learned you can't have just one. I've got two Paras right now, a P14 Ltd. single action and a 12.45 LDA. Looking to pick up one or two more.

In your experience, is the Wilson Combat CQB worth all the extra money? It's way out of my price range, but. . . if I don't buy now, I won't be able to buy later. I saw one today and it looked, felt and smelled (yes, smelled -- try it sometime) just beautiful.

Looking at the Wilson, a Colt XSE (if I can find any of them) and maybe a Springfield Armory TRP. No Kimbers. Seen too many problems with Kimbers.

What's your take on it?

I have been considering 45-70 for close work, say inside buildings. Any thoughts on that option?

Reading about all these rifles it suddenly hit me that I like them all.

If I could have just one rifle to last me the rest of my life it would be one I foolishly traded off. It was a 1903A3 Springfield. It was made by Remington and appeared unfired when I picked it up in Garden City, Kansas back around 1985. The barrel was stamped 1943 and that rifle would shoot like a house on fire.

I recall reading many years ago when some writer, (it might have been Cooper) said he liked the M14 better than the M16, but then recalled that his old sargeant thought the 1903 Springfield was better than the Garand. He figured military men always like the old ones better.

Now that I think about it, one of the reasons the Germans didn't go to automatic's earlier was that Hitler was very fond of the 98 Mauser he used in WWI.
