He should wait until the Weekend before the election to drop out and endorse Arnold.

I'm concerned about the absentee ballots. It is true that, even waiting until the last weekend there is sufficient time to mail them, people will be anxious to get the ballots out.

The real question is how much time the Democrats need for a nuclear dirt bomb on Schwarzenegger to take effect. We saw with Bush 2000 that the Friday before the election was enough time to cost Bush the popular vote.

With so many Ahnuld threads in the news lately (one today even reports that Arnold "seriously considered" switching his party registration to RAT recently), I thought I'd BUMP this recall era thread as a reminder to all the former "Conan the Republican" supporters who say they regret voting for Arnie but still insist they had "no idea" he would turn out so bad. MineralMan predicted EXACTLY what would happen, but the pro-Arnold crowd opted to ignore it at the time. Many us posted similar predictions -- I could probably find a dozen posts from different freepers saying the exact same thing.

I myself said RINOs deliver for nobody but the left (pointing out how many states Gore easily won that were governed by a RINO in 2000) and that the Dems would continue to have monopoly rule over California in an Arnie administration and that all the states economic problems would falsely be blamed on "Republican rule" when Arnie's term was up, because the socialist Governor doing the bidding of his Democrat masters happened to have an "R" to his name (just how Rod Blagojevich got elected Governor of Illinois as a "reformer". He blamed all the states problems on "years of bad Republican rule", with the media conveniently ignoring the fact that he agreed with the outgoing RINO Governor on every issue).

And yes I urged Californians to vote NO on recall once Arnie began having a clear lead in the polls. That's something both Tom and Arnold supporters were wrong on.

Sadly the only way to recover from a mistake like this is to completely divorce the state GOP of Arnold's policies. The Illinois GOP failed to do that in 2002, they ran a guy for Governor who had the same last name as the outgoing RINO Governor and been on record saying RINO George Ryan had done a "good job" and that he wouldn't have run if George had wanted another term! Naturally the state GOP got slaughtered. On the plus side, in 2006, the grassroots balked at the RINO George Ryan crony the party put up for Governor, and now as you can see, Blago and Burris "record" are being laid squarely at the feet of Obama. If RINO Judy Barr Topinka was Governor now, she'd probably have raised taxes and made things even worse -- and Obama could just wash his hands of the issue and point the finger at all of Illinois problems at its lone Republican in the Governor's office.

In short, any of the three Ahnuld clones currently seeking the job would be a disaster for the GOP, and running them will likely result in someone like Jerry Brown pointing fingers at their support of Arnold's "Republican" policies and winning the Governorship easily. Golden Gate's suggestion of Gregg Cunningham seeking the job is an interesting choice, and he's certainly well qualified for the job. If Cunningham doesn't run a single issue pro-life campaign, he should be a strong candidate. But until Cunningham expresses interest in the job, we need to keep looking for an alternative.

Bottom line: Ahnuld is Governor of 1/5th of this nation's population and his political career and legacy must be TERMINATED in 2010.

Interesting. I had forgotten about the daily recall threads. I never posted on them much, but generally stuck with the breaking news threads on the recall. My fav was when Arnie started getting called the Gropenator and when he was caught with a history of using the "N word" just like Bustamante.

I think the two biggest "Candidate A vs. Candidate B" fights we've had on FR over the last 8 years was Ahnuld vs. Tom in California and Bill McCollum vs. Mel Martinez in Florida, and I'm proud to say I was on the right side of both of them. Martinez turned out to be a disaster for FL just like Arnie in CA. Martinez supporters even had the gall to claim he was the "true conservative" in the race, something no Arnoldbot would dare claim about their guy. (Both claimed that "only" their could "win" though)

You know what I'd like to find out... are there exit polls on how each group of candidate's supporters voted on the recall question? That is, how many Bustamante voters were "YES" on recall and "NO" on recall, and ditto with Tom and Arnold? I'm guessing Arnoldbots had the highest percentage of "YES" on Recall Davis and Cruz voters had the lowest percentage of "YES" on recalling Davis, with Tom voters in the middle. How many Tom McClintock voters answered "YES" to recall and how many answered "NO"?

Regarding biggest FR fights, I didn’t follow the McCollum/Martinez wars. But I remember the Toomey/Specter fight.

I don’t remember seeing the kind of exit poll you describe.

Oh yeah but Toomey/Specter was more like 80% of the thread participants solidly in Toomey's camp and the remaining 20% saying "I personally don't like Specter but I must support whoever President Bush tells me to". (followed by them assuring FR that it would be Specter's "last term" and he would retire in 2010) ;-)

The Arnie/Tom and McCollum/Martinez wars were more evenly divided between both camps.

I think the one positive to come out of the whole Arnoldbot scheme to take over the CA GOP is we saw this coming in 2008 with the Giualini crowd trying to shove him down our throats, and this time conservatives didn't allow it. (though we ended up with backstabber McCain instead). However, I think a Giuliani takeover of the GOP nationally would have been fatal. The GOP would have become a carbon copy of the Dems on most issues with the only difference being Giuliani harping about "9/11". At least now we have Sarah Palin.
