I'm trying to imagine the content of his conversations with Amber, too. Let's see. How about something like this?
"Hi sweetie! Yeah. Hey, Merry Christmas from your horny Santa, heh heh. Wish I could be with you.... Hey, listen, Amber, honey... Huh? New Year's? No, I won't be back from Europe by New Year's, sweetheart... I know, I know, I miss you like crazy, too... Hey, listen, Amber, honey, I kind of like need your help with something. See, this really good friend of mine is missing.... Yeah. Right there in Modesto. Yeah. Her name is Laci... um... Laci... Rocha. Hey, look, I'm kind of busy now helping them find her.... Huh? Oh! Europe. Yeah, well, you know, everything is so global now, I can be of quite a bit of help to them even from over here... internet and all... Huh? NO, she wasn't... I mean, ISN'T... THAT kind of friend, honey! I... I... knew her, uh, husband... big golfing buddy of mine..."

It is interesting that he called her Christmas morning. It's hard to know what to make of it without the context. I'd like to know when the police became suspicious and how they were treating him at that time. I suspect that he talked to the police quite a bit initially and they might have caught him in some lies on the first day. If so, he may have a strong need to call Amber for reassurance. Also, I'm not fully convinced that this is a guy who was out having superficial affairs (like most guys who fool around on their wives). I would like to know if his past affairs were obsessive (think Glen Close in Fatal Attraction).

I'm trying to imagine the content of his conversations with Amber, too. We'll never know about the 4 phone conversations on Christmas day because Amber's phone wasn't tapped then, unless Amber's recollection is excellent. BTW, did SP make all 4 calls to her or did she initiate some of them? Does the report say?

It would have to be a pretty dumb juror that would overlook a phone call to his girlfriend ONE day after her "demise"!! I cann't wait to hear all these phone tapped conversations. They alone, may convict Snott. The words from his own mouth.

I have a feeling we are going to find out what was said on those taped phone calls!! I think so too. But I want my own set of copies of the tapes. I want to be able able to pause them and play them back.
I am pretty sure Scott killed Laci (and Connor), but I'd like to be able to hear those tapes. Closely. I am pretty good at reading between lines.

You, my dear, are mean. Almost as mean as me. You'd make for a good dinner date.
To: The Other Harry
You know it occurred to me that if the Feds "already" had Peterson under investigation, they may have had his cell phones tapped already. Being as Laci's family said that the FIRST night of the Search "all Scott did was talk on the phone", wouldn't it be something if we could hear those conversations. I'm willing to bet that he was acting as normal as if it were just another day. He's just sick sick sick. He is literally devoid of natural affection and feelings. His only feelings are for himself.

His only feelings are for himself. That is a psychopath. I worked with one once.

Regarding his 8 a.m. (or so) Christmas call to Amber, I think he knew he'd be in the doghouse if he didn't at least call her on a big day like that. I think he also knew that if he didn't get in touch with her at the earliest decent hour, she'd be calling him, and maybe her call would come in when he had someone with him... such as the ROCHAS!!
At some point, and I think it was right after Laci "went missing", and it could easily have been Christmas Day, the Rochas were with Scott at his house. Because I remember the Rochas pointed out to the press that Scott was spending time vacuuming. VACUUMING!!!
But I do think you're right about the reassurance thing, overall. He needed his "mommy" b/c he was afraid, afraid of the very deep waters he was in. Afraid, b/c there was no taking it back now!
He did seem quite obsessive about Amber, but I find it hard to believe he got that crazy about any past affairs, b/c if he had, I think we'd have heard about it by now.
I wonder if a touch of the obsessive/compulsive would play into this? Do you think so? What I'm thinking of is, as we all know, he could have just divorced Laci. Then he'd have been "damaged"; he'd have the old child support obligation, and the weekend visitation, and the division of property. A lot of loose ends. I just get this feeling that he couldn't stand to be out there as "damaged goods", with loose ends to bother him. I just get this feeling that he had to do something that (he thought) would give him a totally clean break from both Laci and Connor--as if they had never existed, "as if their lives had no meaning", to borrow a phrase from Sharon Rocha.

Harry!! I'm appalled!!

As for when the police first became suspicious, I believe they became suspicious immediately. They wanted to come into the house early on, and he told them to go get a warrant first. ("Ho hum, yeah, the wife's missing, but we can't forget our rights...") Of course, that was his right, but it's also the police's way to take something like that as suspicious. I think he told them the sturgeon-fishing story from the first; however, I think the air sort of came out of that one when they casually asked, "What bait did you use?" and he "couldn't remember". Less than 48 hours later, and he couldn't remember?
To: Sandylapper
All I know is, I remember that Geraldo said that Rita Cosby said that Scott called Amber at about 8-8:30 a.m. on Christmas morning.
If you recall, there were no "Scott sightings" reported on Christmas. I still don't know what he did with his time that day. I vaguely remember that it was reported that he stayed inside and hid from the press on that day.
To: Devil_Anse
I still don't know what he did with his time that dayI don't either, Anse, but IIRC, it was rumored or reported that he was busy vacuuming while the Rochas visited him.
To: Sandylapper
That's what I heard, too! I wish I could remember the source! I mean, obviously it came from the Rochas (I'm thinking, Brent), but I can't remember where that was reported.
How could anyone not think it looked just a LITTLE strange to be seen VACUUMING while you've not only got guests in your home, but while your wife is MISSING, and while it's CHRISTMAS DAY??

I think this is from Fox News related to your question:
Attorney Says He Has Evidence for Peterson Kidnap Plot
Updated Sunday Sept 28, 2003
Snip it:
"In other developments, Fox News has learned that Peterson and his mistress, Amber Frey (search), were in frequent contact around the time of his wife's disappearance.
According to phone records, Peterson and Frey spoke at least twice on Christmas Eve, the day Laci Peterson went missing.
The following day, they spoke again at 8:23 in the morning, and at least three more times afterward.
Frey called Peterson 13 times on Dec. 26. The 28-year-old single mother and massage therapist has said that she did not know that Peterson was married and that his wife was missing until Dec. 29. At 1:43 a.m. the following day she called Modesto police and informed them of her relationship with Peterson.
Those familiar with the prosecution's case have told Fox News that it will hinge on Peterson's love for Frey as the motive in the double murders. Frey will play a lead role and lawyers are currently preparing her to take the stand at the Oct. 20 preliminary hearing, the sources said.
On Valentine's Day, Peterson phoned Frey seven times to say he was in love with her and wanted to see her, sources in the investigation told Fox News.
Fox News' Rita Cosby contributed to this report."

Yes, he was (is) very obsessed. I believe he continued to call and write her after she had her news conference with the police. I think that is pretty telling. As to past relationships, we really haven't gotten that information yet. Although, I agree, if he went as far as Glen Close in FA we would know about that! Most people who have obsessive relationships don't go that far. They don't get over someone until there's a replacement.
"I wonder if a touch of the obsessive/compulsive would play into this? Do you think so? What I'm thinking of is, as we all know, he could have just divorced Laci. I do think there are alot of compulsive behaviors here. As you may know, the personality disorders share many characteristics. What distinguishes one from the other is what symptoms are central (strong) as opposed to prominent (weaker but present). There is an obsessive-compuslive personality disorder (different from the mental illness). This differs from narcissistic disorder in that the central feature of OC is controlling/manipulative (this is a prominent, or weaker symptom of narcissism). I think your assessment of his motivation could be right. He didn't want to look bad to others by leaving his wife, he didn't want to lose control of her or the situation, nor did he want the financial & psychological obligations for life. Killing her would take care of all of that. But again, as I always say, I'm just making guesses based on what I see.

Thank you for the excellent explanation! I think I see various telltale signs of this or that, but it's hard to figure out exactly what to call his weirdness!
His continuing to contact Amber, after she made that very public first appearance with the police, is really over the top. I could see his maybe calling her once or twice after that, perhaps "just to show that they didn't rattle him", or "just to show that it's not the way they think it is", but he kept calling her a LOT!! And he seems to have been so deluded that he thought there was still a chance for him to just be with Amber, with all this having been put quickly behind him. Unbelievable!

From the first paragraph of this story it seems as though ther will be evidence to back Carrol up...
